Job Description:

A Brief Overview

Works under direct supervision of pharmacists performing clerical tasks, drug distribution activities, computerized order entry, and other medication management duties as authorized by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiner's laws, rules and regulations. Prepare medications under the direction of a pharmacist. May measure, mix, and count out, label, and record amounts and dosages of medications. May review and document patient's arrival medication assuring appropriate dose, route, frequency and duration of therapy.

What you will do

  • Receive written prescription or refill requests and verify that information is complete and accurate.
  • Establish and maintain patient profiles, including lists of medications taken by individual patients.
  • Maintain proper storage and security conditions for drugs.
  • Answer telephones, responding to questions or requests.
  • Prepack bulk medicines, fill bottles with prescribed medications, and type and affix labels.
  • Mix pharmaceutical preparations according to written prescriptions.
  • Clean, and help maintain, equipment and work areas, and sterilize glassware according to prescribed methods.
  • Price and file prescriptions that have been filled.
  • Assist customers by answering simple questions, locating items or referring them to the pharmacist for medication information.
  • Receive and store incoming supplies, verify quantities against invoices, check for outdated medications in current inventory, and inform supervisors of stock needs and shortages.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.

Qualifications

  • H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) High school graduate Required
  • Pharmacy experience Preferred
  • Computer experience Preferred
  • Customer and Personal Service
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, and other office procedures and terminology.
  • Knowledge of the information needed to treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
  • Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Talking to others to convey information effectively.
  • Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Actively looking for ways to help people.

  • Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support & First Aid- American Heart Association within 60 Days Preferred
  • Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter- Iowa Department of Human Services within 180 Days Preferred
  • National Certified Pharmacy Tech Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) (United States of America) within 1 Year Required or
  • National Certified Pharmacy Tech National Healthcareer Association (NHA) (United States of America) within 1 Year Required
  • Certified Pharmacy Tech Iowa Board of Pharmacy (United States of America) within 1 Year Required
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician Trainee Iowa Board of Pharmacy (United States of America) Upon Hire Required

Qualifications:

The Certified Pharmacy Technician Trainee will be required to have this certificate upon hire and are required to obtain the Certified Pharmacy Technician certificate within 1 year of hire, both issued by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy.

If a Certified Pharmacy Technician certificate is already obtained by the date of hire, issued by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy, the Certified

Pharmacy Technician Trainee certification is not necessary.

Maintains valid licensure/certification/registration through the Iowa Board of Pharmacy is required.

Registered by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy.

Nationally certified required within one year of hire if not already certified (at employee's expense).

May require additional competencies based on accreditation, including Specialty Pharmacy.
