Job Description:

Pharmacy Admixture Technician with IOD

This role operates under the supervision of the physician to verify and execute orders to facilitate the safe, efficient, accurate administration of treatment to patients.

Responsibilities for Admixture Technician:

  • Calculates correct volumes/doses and compounds medications, chemotherapy, and biotherapy using sterile technique
  • Oversees inventory control and documentation of medications and pharmaceutical/nursing supplies
  • Ensures safety and quality control by maintaining MSDSA sheets, conducting inspections of emergency equipment and medications, monitoring expiration dates, and properly storing medications
  • Reviews relevant patient information and verifies orders for accuracy, appropriateness, authorization, and completeness
  • Packages and labels medications per policy to facilitate safe administration
  • Disposes of hazardous drugs, materials and waste according to OSHA
  • Maintains appropriate records as related to the daily operation of the clinical pharmacy
  • Anticipates barriers to timely pharmaceutical care and assists in problem solving
  • Responsible for the cleaning of all pharmacy areas including the hood daily
  • Responds to the emergency medical needs of the patients

Additional IOD Responsibilities include:

  • Verify patient demographics, insurance information, allergies, and prescription information after receiving through prescription software.
  • Process prescriptions and bill insurance for payment; ensure prescriptions and paperwork are being signed off by a provider.
  • Ability to adapt to QS/1 prescription processing software.
  • Understanding/knowledge of oral oncology medications
  • Understanding of prescription insurance
  • Ensure all required patient documents are signed/filed.
  • Medicare Part B prescription processing.
  • Submit prior authorizations for oral chemotherapy agents, along with other medications needing authorization from the insurance.
  • Seek out financial assistance for patients needing help with copay or applying for high dollar medications from the manufacturer.
  • Ability to interact with providers regarding interactions or dosing on prescriptions.
  • Ensure that the most cost-effective drugs are ordered from vendors.
  • Compassion for patients, understanding the need for urgency and to help patient obtain their medications regardless of who is filling the prescription.
  • Monthly inventories
  • Processing, labeling, counting prescriptions, obtaining a check from the provider before calling patient.
  • Maintenance of all prescriptions required by state law.
  • Ability to assist with any audits from insurance companies:  pulling prescriptions and signature logs.

Qualifications:

  • Pharmacy experience in the preparation of IV chemotherapy and biotherapy
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician Certificate
  • 2+ years of experience in a busy hematology/oncology clinic
  • BLS Certification
  • Medical terminology
