Job Title: Inpatient Pharmacy Technician
Department: Pharmacy
Reports To: Pharmacy Manager / Pharmacist-in-Charge
Employment Type: Full-Time / Part-Time (as applicable)
Job Summary
The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician supports the delivery of safe, accurate, and timely medication services to hospitalized patients. Working under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the technician assists with medication preparation, distribution, inventory management, and compliance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and patient safety practices.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare, package, label, and distribute medications for inpatient units in accordance with physician orders and pharmacy policies
Assist pharmacists in compounding sterile and non-sterile medications, including IV admixtures, following USP and hospital guidelines
Deliver medications to nursing units and automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) and perform restocking as required
Accurately enter medication orders and patient information into the pharmacy information system, as permitted by state law
Maintain medication inventory, including ordering, receiving, stocking, rotating, and removing expired products
Perform controlled substance handling, documentation, and inventory in compliance with hospital policy and regulatory requirements
Participate in medication reconciliation and cart exchange processes, as applicable
Ensure proper storage, handling, and security of medications at all times
Assist with quality assurance activities, audits, and performance improvement initiatives
Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant pharmacy workspace
Provide excellent customer service to nurses, physicians, and other healthcare staff
Qualifications
Education & Certification:
High school diploma or equivalent required
Pharmacy Technician certification (CPhT) required or preferred, depending on state and hospital requirements
Active state pharmacy technician registration/licensure required
Experience:
Previous inpatient hospital pharmacy experience preferred
Experience with sterile compounding and IV preparation strongly preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations and medication distribution systems
Familiarity with automated dispensing cabinets (e.g., Pyxis, Omnicell)
Ability to follow detailed procedures and maintain a high level of accuracy
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Effective communication and teamwork skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced healthcare environment while maintaining attention to detail
Basic computer skills and experience with pharmacy information systems
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the hospital for extended periods
Ability to lift and carry up to 25–50 pounds, as required
Manual dexterity to prepare medications and operate pharmacy equipment
Work Environment
Hospital inpatient pharmacy setting
May require rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call coverage
Compliance & Safety
Adheres to all hospital policies, state and federal regulations, and accreditation standards
Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations
