Job Description

Job Summary

The Pharmacy Technician works as part of the health system specialty pharmacy to support the delivery of accurate, high quality pharmaceutical care to patients. Supports all aspects of the medication fulfillment process, including patient profile maintenance, data entry, prescription adjudication, filling, packaging, and shipping medications. Performs patient outreach to provide updates, refill reminders, process refills, and ensure ongoing continuity of care. 

Essential Functions

  • Create and maintain patient profiles within the pharmacy system, including demographic, insurance, and prescription record details.
  • Perform prescription data entry into the appropriate patient profiles.
  • Process new and refill prescription orders.
  • Adjudicate prescriptions to third party payers and resolve simple and complex adjudication errors.
  • Prepare, fill, and label medications for verification by a pharmacist.
  • Prepare and package medications for delivery to patients in a manner that maintains manufacturer storage requirements and maintains product stability and integrity.
  • Perform patient outreach to coordinate care, provide refill reminders, schedule deliveries, and facilitate ongoing treatment success. 
  • Provide exceptional customer service to patients, provider office staff, and external business associates.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Education
    • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Licensure
    • Licensed Pharmacy Technician in the State of Pennsylvania.
  • Certifications
    • National pharmacy technician certification (CPhT or ExCPT) preferred. 
  • Experience
    • At least six months’ pharmacy technician experience required.
    • Experience in retail, mail order, or specialty pharmacy required

  • Capable of working both independently as well as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking in identifying, assessing, and responding to medication-related issues.
  • Ability to multi-task and organize workload for efficient use of time.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines, high volumes, and multiple interruptions.
  • Strong communication skills, including active listening, speaking, and effective writing.
  • Demonstrates cultural competency, compassion, and advocacy across the health care team.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Normal pharmacy environment. The position requires the incumbent to be exposed to a variety of substances within the department, including occasional exposure to hazardous waste materials, toxins, and hazardous pharmaceuticals. 
  • Strength: position requires incumbent to frequently perform physical activities requiring ability to push/pull or lift objects of up to 20 pounds; seldom perform physical activities requiring ability to push/pull or lift objects of up to 50 pounds.
  • Manual Dexterity: position requires incumbent to constantly perform simple motor skills such as standing or walking and manipulative skills such as writing; frequently perform simple and moderately difficult manipulative skills such as typing, filling, labeling, or packaging medications; and rarely perform difficult manipulative skills.
  • Coordination: position requires incumbent to constantly perform gross body coordination such as walking and stooping and frequently perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as keyboard skills.
  • Mobility: position requires incumbent to constantly perform mobility skills such as walking, standing, and sitting, with seldom-prolonged standing or sitting in an uncomfortable position.
  • Visual Discrimination: position requires incumbent to frequently see objects closely for reading.
  • Hearing: position requires incumbent to constantly be able to hear normal sound with some background noise.
