Position Summary Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. Primary responsibility is the provision of medication distributive functions and pharmacy operational tasks, which includes but is not limited to assisting the pharmacist with all duties of preparing and dispensing of medications, inventory management, and regulatory compliance. Performs duties necessary for the effective daily operation of all departments services and programs. Accurately responds to medication dispensing requests, prepares medication for pharmacist final review/check, delivers checked medications, and returns unused or expired medications to appropriate areas.Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Associates / technical degree in physical science, business, or healthcare or specific certification related to the position preferred.

    Licenses and Certification

  • Illinois Pharmacy Technician License or within 60 days upon receipt of submission to the state. 
  • Note: not applicable for those licensees that are pending licensure reinstatement due to disciplinary action.

    • Current Pharmacy Technician Certificate (PTCB/ICPT/NHA)

    Experience and Skills• Technical: 3 years hospital pharmacy experience within the past 8 years.Required:• Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, problem-solving, and customer service skills• Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changes as necessary.• Ability to interact constructively with supervisors, peers, and external customers.• Ability to follow direction from formal management personnel and informal supervisors (pharmacists) and work independently.• Ability to identify, mitigate, and assist in resolving pharmacy operational or program issues.• Knowledge of medical terminology• Must be able to read, write, and speak conversational English.• Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft office.

    Preferred:• Ability to teach pharmacy technician trainees.• Proficiency in hospital computer system technology and automation.• Knowledge and competence in aseptic techniques, hazardous drug compounding and USP 795, 797, and 800 standards (if applicable).• Knowledge and competence in the medication reconciliation process.

    Roles and ResponsibilitiesPharmacy Operations• Actively performs all pharmacy technician functions and maintains active proficiency in standard work parameters, hospital and pharmacy specific computers systems, and operational programs.• Maintains operational knowledge, competency and actively provides coverage on the following when needed:• Centralized/Decentralized distributive pharmacy operations.• USP Sterile compounding (797/800).• Controlled Substance Handling.• Participates in appropriate utilization of medication automation, technology, and computer systems.• Maintains expertise in electronic health record system and be able to accurately interpret electronic records as needed.• Accurately completes medication inventories and accurately prepares and dispenses patient-specific medication doses. Prevents improver drug, dose, dosage form selection, expiration dating, and barcode scanning issues when checking products.• Performs oral and injectable compounding.• Carries out special projects or assignments as directed by supervisor or manager.• Properly process and appropriately dispose of all waste materials, including all levels of hazardous waste, within the department using approved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Hazardous Medication Spill Kits in the event of a hazardous medication spill.Pharmacy Practice• Facilitates medication safety practices by identifying and reporting potential medication errors such as look-alike sound-alike medications.• Prepares and delivers medication in an accurate, safe, and timely manner.Teaching, Training, Precepting, and Mentorship• Mentors new staff and assists with training.• Demonstrates desire and aptitude for instructing, modeling, and coaching others.Quality Improvement, Regulatory Compliance, and Accreditation• Supports and participates in medication-use process improvements led by colleagues and peers.• Supports regulatory compliance initiatives and institutional accreditation processes.

    Compensation (Commensurate with experience):

    $20.19 - $31.29
