Overview
Reporting to the Philharmonia General Manager, this position would assist in coordinating and executing the production and music library functions necessary for the effective operation of all Philharmonia and New Music New Haven (NMNH) rehearsals and concerts. This includes preparing stage plots, arranging for harp and percussion needs, arranging for all equipment needs, supervising the student stage crew, coordinating venue set up, stage changes, tear downs as well as training and supervising student librarians, ordering parts, preparing and distributing parts, and instructing composers about NMNH deadlines and reviewing their parts to ensure MOLA compliance.
Required Skills and Abilities
1.Excellent organizational skills with ability to meet deadlines successfully.
2.Knowledge of comb and tape binding techniques and demonstrated advanced ability to read music notation.
3.Ability to work occasional nights and weekends as dictated by the Philharmonia and NMNH production schedule.
4.Knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, e-mail, and the Internet.
5.Ability to coordinate multiple tasks calmly and efficiently while under pressure. Ability to lift and carry objects up to 30 pounds without assistance.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
Bachelor's degree in arts administration, music, or related area with two or more years of experience in music performance, music librarianship, stage management, concert production or arts administration.
Principal Responsibilities
- Evaluate instrument and equipment needs for each series. Create and update plots for each piece performed. Plan and execute all load-ins, load-outs, stage setups, stage changes, and teardowns. 2. Prepare and execute detailed plans for percussion and harp moves for each series in conjunction with the YSM Percussion and Harp assistants. Confirm all instrument moves with other ensembles and users of venues. 3. Double-check venue holds before each call, noting any limitations on room access. 4. Coordinate student stage crew and create weekly crew schedule. Supervise student stage crew and lead by example by working with crew for all calls. 5. Monitor condition of equipment and make recommendations for repairs. 6. Participate in weekly staff meetings to plan needs for upcoming calls. 7. May serve as a secondary supervisor for rehearsals. 8. Oversee all operations of the orchestra library. 9. Hire, train, schedule and supervise student staff in the preparation of parts for all series. 10. Establish and adhere to a strict schedule of deadlines for the preparation and distribution of parts for all series. 11. Order music for concerts. Schedule and execute the distribution and collection of all music for concert series. Complete rental contracts with publishing houses and abide by copyright regulations. 12. Obtain signed consent forms from publishing houses for all rentals. Required Education and Experience Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
