For over 25 years, National Experienced Workforce Solutions (NEW Solutions) has specialized in connecting experienced workers (ages 55+) with full-time and part-time job opportunities that support the critical missions of Federal Agencies across the United States.

NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the National Park Service (NPS). These experienced professionals provide administrative expertise, facilities management, natural and cultural resource planning, and a broad array of other professional skills that support the National Park Service through the Experienced Services Program (ESP).

Positions listed here do not guarantee employment for any definite period. Enrollment in the Experienced Worker Programs administered by NEW Solutions is temporary. The enrollment relationship between NEW Solutions and the Enrollee is an ?at-will? relationship. This means that an Enrollee is free to terminate enrollment at any time during the enrollment period, and NEW Solutions and the Agency have the right to terminate the relationship with the Enrollee.

PLEASE NOTE: An ?Enrollee? is not a federal employee, nor an employee of NEW Solutions. An ?Enrollee? is a participant in a grant program established through a Cooperative Agreement funded by the agency and administered by NEW Solutions.

Qualifications:

PhD Degree with minimum additional experience of 5 year(s) in planning and performing maintenance of remote weather stations accessed by fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft, involving Campbell Scientific and Forest Technology Systems data loggers.

  • Experience as a Department of Interior helicopter crew member and helicopter manager. Skill diagnosing and repairing remote automated weather stations. Skill programming Forest Technology Systems and Campbell Scientific data loggers.

Duties:

Plans, coordinates, and performs maintenance on remote automated weather stations in SW Alaska National Parks

  • Performs maintenance and equipment upgrades on remote weather stations   20%
  • Plans and coordinates resources for weather station maintenance   50%
  • Consults with NPS personnel to conduct strategic planning for long-term weather station maintenance   20%
  • Trains NPS personnel on basic weather station maintenance protocols   10%
Other:
  • Overnight travel: This work will require 2-4 trips of 4-14 days, depending on weather, workload, and other contingencies. These would mostly occur in May, June, and July.
  • Air travel anticipated: Standard commercial air travel will occur once or twice between Anchorage and King Salmon, AK. Air travel by local air taxi may occur once or twice between Anchorage and Port Alsworth, AK (note that these flights cannot be arranged in concur, one must deal directly with the air taxi service). Air travel on park or contracted fixed and rotary wing aircraft will be necessary to reach worksites, this will occur between 6 and 18 times.
  • Health and Safety Considerations: The Interagency Aviation Training division of DOI specifies required training for aircrew members and aviation managers for fixed wing and helicopter missions. The employee may fulfill some of these requirements as training is available, but will need to have completed a substantial amount of this training already. The ideal candidate will have been recently certified in these roles and only need to complete refresher trainings to maintain currency.
  • Required Safety Gear: Personal protective equipment (eg. Flight suit, helmet, and gloves) may be required for some helicopter and fixed wing aviation missions. NPS will provide such equipment as needed.
