Reno Orthopedic Center's Physical Therapy Post-Graduate Training Program prepares clinicians for advanced, evidence-based practice through structured mentorship, direct collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams, and comprehensive exposure to a diverse patient population and surgical conditions. The program is committed to developing competent, ethical practitioners who deliver high-quality, patient-centered orthopedic care.

Curriculum Outline:

This will be a 13-month program where you will obtain 4 hours of clinical 1:1 mentoring per week as well as 32 non-mentored hours.

Didactic:

  • Monthly journal clubs
  • Monthly physician/surgery shadowing
  • 2 hours of online learning modules per week (self-paced)
  • Independent study of 3 hours per week

What would you do in this role?

  • Plan, prepare, and carry out individually designed programs of physical treatment to maintain, improve, or restore physical functioning, alleviate pain, or prevent physical dysfunction in patients;
  • Review physician’s referral and patient’s medical records and confer with patient and appropriate medical practitioners to plan, implement, and assess the intervention program;
  • Identify and document goals, anticipated progress, and plans for reevaluation;
  • Test, measure and record in patient’s electronic medical record the patient’s strength, motor development, functional capacity, sensory perception, and respiratory and/or circulatory efficiency;
  • Analyze patient progress and data, record in electronic medical record and modify interventions to achieve anticipated goals and expected outcomes, including referring to other practitioners as needed;
  • Educate patients about injury prevention, ergonomics, and ways to promote health;
  • Instruct patient in use of assistive devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, and canes as well as in treatment procedures to be continued at home;
  • Discharge patient from physical therapy when goals or projected outcomes have been attained; provide for appropriate follow-up care or referrals;
  • Participate in scheduled individual mentoring sessions with an experienced physical therapist;
  • Incorporate mentor feedback to improve clinical reasoning, examination techniques, and treatment interventions;
  • Attend and actively participate in didactic lectures, case discussions, journal clubs and skills laboratories;
  • Complete assigned readings, clinical projects, and competency assessments within program timelines.

Requirements

Certifications/Education

  • Graduate of a CAPTE-accredited physical therapy program;
  • Basic Life Support certification;
  • Active Nevada Physical Therapy license from Nevada State Board (or eligible to obtain).
