Responsibilities:

JOB SUMMARY
The Physical Therapist Assistant is responsible for the administration, documentation, and billing of evidence-based physical therapy treatments under the direction of a licensed Physical Therapist. They use specialized skills to promote goals of prevention of dysfunction, restoration of function and/or reversal of the progression of pathology in order to enhance quality of movement and daily living skills for individuals with physical disabilities and/or functional limitations. They follow a physical therapist's plan of care in collaboration with the patient/family to assist in returning them to their prior level of function. They act in accordance with state and national organizational standards, regulatory agencies, and established department policies and procedures. They embody strong customer service skills and communicate in a concise, tactful manner with supervising physical therapists, physicians, co-workers, caregivers, family members, patients, and other healthcare providers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provides personalized skilled physical therapy treatments under the supervision of a physical therapist, using a variety of evidence-based techniques, frame of references, and modalities. Modifies an intervention in accordance with changes in patient/client status within the scope of the established plan of care. Provides verbal and written instructions to patients, caregivers, and family members as needed. Maintains a current knowledge of physical therapy techniques, through continuing education courses, professional journals, etc., as well as DNV and Medicare requirements.
  • Confers with the physical therapist to clarify treatment plan and discuss patient status when indicated. Communicates essential information regarding patients to the supervising physical therapist, which may include proposed changes to the treatment plan, daily patient progress, changes in the patient’s medical status, the need for reassessment, and the need to discontinue skilled services.
  • Maintains accurate and current documentation in the patient’s medical record as required by the profession and the department, including daily treatment notes, progress within the individualized treatment plans, discharge notes, and daily patient charges. Completes billing and billing sheets according to department billing procedures and within established timeframes. Assumes responsibility for role in achieving/maintaining financial stewardship by utilizing all resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Communicates verbally and in writing, in a concise and professional manner with physicians, co-workers, caregivers, patients, family members, and other healthcare providers. Addresses concerns to achieve optimal treatment outcomes as demonstrated through feedback and documentation. Provides timely, proactive feedback to case managers and other key personnel regarding discharge and equipment needs as appropriate. Participates in Interdisciplinary rounds as indicated. Utilizes effective communication and interpersonal skills to enhance and encourage collaborative staff relationships. Acts as a resource for therapy-related issues to therapy assistive personnel and staff from other departments.
  • Assists in the identification of department needs and process improvements. Contributes to the recruitment and retention of talented staff through positive role-modeling and fostering peer relationships. Participates in departmental and interdepartmental staff meetings, in-services, utilization review programs, committees and mentor programs as indicated.
  • Under the direction of the supervising physical therapist, works with PTA students according to state regulatory requirements and departmental guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
  • Associates from an accredited school for Physical Therapist Assistants, prior to starting employment Required
EXPERIENCE
  • Other Network pool: Six (6) months of recent experience Required
  • 6 months experience Preferred
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Certification Required
  • Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) - Certification Phys Therapy Asst Current certificate issued by the AZ State Board of Physical Therapy that is in good standing, prior to starting employment Required
