Job Description

I. JOB SUMMARYThe LMH Health Sports Physical Therapy Residency has been granted candidacy by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education as an APTA-credentialed sports physical therapy residency.The Mission of the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Sports Physical Therapy Residency is to develop master practitioners to evaluate, treat, and rehabilitate the sports population with advanced clinical treatment, critical thinking, and diagnostic skills. Residents will be prepared to serve patients, the profession, and the community through integrated education, clinical practice, and research in sports medicine.II. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIESGoals for the Residency:• Using evidence-informed decisions, the resident will effectively manage sports injuries in the acute, chronic, and post-operative active patient from injury to return to play/performance.• Critically evaluate, implement, and when possible, produce quality research in sports physical therapy.• Effectively participate in on-field assessments/emergency management of sports injuries.• Be able to effectively design programming for the late-stage athlete using principles of strength training and conditioning.• Understand and implement concussion treatment protocols for athletes• Understand the complexity of holistic health of the athlete, including medical and psychosocial considerations via collaboration with surgeons, sports medicine physicians, PAs, and ATCs.• Advance clinical knowledge through participation in teaching/preparing presentations for journal clubs and the annual LMH Sports Medicine Symposium, with opportunity to submit for platform/poster presentation at CSM, or other conferences.• Organize and implement strategies for community education and/or prevention of injury in the active population.• Become familiar with and proficient in biomechanical analysis of running, pitching, and the golf swing• Successfully pass the ABPTS Sports Specialist Certification (SCS) Examination• Commitment: The residency is one-yearResponsibilities:• Provide 25 hours per week of clinical coverage in our outpatient sports and orthopedic rehabilitation facility.• Spend a minimum of 10 hours per week in mentored and didactic time with residency faculty• Complete a minimum of 1,500 hours of sports medicine clinical practice• Complete a minimum of 200 hours of sports physical therapy coverage at athletic venues• Complete a minimum of 150 mentored hours, one-on-one, with a sports board certified specialist.• Participate in a minimum of 100 hours of clinical instructor interaction in non-patient care planned educational experiences (i.e. office visits with orthopedic surgeons, time with MSK radiologist, surgery observation).• Overview of Curriculum• Clinical practice in spacious 17,000 sq. ft. sports medicine rehabilitation facility• Practice/game coverage and rehabilitation for athletes• Research opportunities• Conference presentations• Surgery and office observation with orthopedic surgeons• Assist in the rehabilitation of Division I athletes at the University of Kansas• Monthly journal clubs• Weekly mentoring/meeting with program director• Mentoring/work with concussion care team• Case study development and publication• Participation in staff meetings and learning administrative roles in sports medicineEvaluation of Sports PT Resident• The resident progress and performance will be evaluated in a number of ways including but not limited to structure quarterly meetings with faculty, weekly meetings with program director and coordinator, internal feedback forms on required presentations and journal club summaries, and achieved goals in publications, research, and/or national presentations.

III. JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Required:• Must be a Licensed physical therapist• Must possess one of the following: current licensure as an athletic trainer or completion of an emergency responder course.
