Plant Watchperson-Eagle, Alaska
Alaska Power & Telephone is hiring a part-timePlant Watchperson in Eagle, Alaska. This position will be responsible for daily plant visits to monitor the facility and record information as well as a number of other tasks vital to ensuring reliable electrical power and communications in Eagle. This position has regular duties totaling 15 hours per week with additional duties scheduled as needed. The watchperson will assist the local telecom operations on an as needed basis. Candidate must be available to advise Tok operations of utility outages and assist restoration activities if requested to do so, day or night. Technical and safety training appropriate to the level of responsibility will be provided by AP&T.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Power Related Tasks
- Regular powerplant, distribution line and fuel facility meter reads, fuel tank level readings, engine oil changes
- As needed troubleshooting and additional maintenance at direction of Tok service area plant and/or line superintendents
- Engine oil changes
- Provide local hands to work under the direction of power engineering and operations to resolve outages or issues in the powerplant or on distribution.
- Provide local support for technicians traveling into the community.
- General cleaning, snow plowing, grounds maintenance, building maintenance and solar panel clearing will be performed regularly.
- May be required to cut trees off non energized lines.
- Assist with basic customer meter tasks such as reads, disconnects and reconnects.
- Telecom Related Tasks (as needed)
- Use telephone handset to test dial-tone at NID (training to be provided by AP&T technicians;
- Perform testing of calling issue
- Provide local hands to work with telecom engineering and operations to resolve outages or issues in the central office or cabinets
- Provide local support for technicians traveling into the community.
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Ability to self-motivate and communicate with other team members
- Ability to safely identify hazards and work around electrical and mechanical
- Ability to operate a chainsaw, experience in clearing trees and brush
- Mental flexibility, willingness to learn unfamiliar parts of the job and a positive attitude
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and background May be subject to random drug testing at any time.
Desired Qualifications:
- 1 year mechanical or electrical experience
Physical Requirements of the Job:
- At times work will be performed in loud environments requiring hearing protection
- At times work will be performed in non-temperature-controlled environments
- At times work will be performed around rotating equipment
- At times work will be performed while sitting, standing, crouching, squatting and at heights
- At times work will be performed in a standard office environment with regularly scheduled working hours
- Must be capable of: Safely lifting/moving up to 70 pounds on occasion, while maintaining good balance
- Safety and PPE must be worn at all times when performing work in the field
- Occasional travel to Tok may be required
Thestarting pay for this position is $30.00 per hour AP&T is a small non-union utility serving over 40 Alaskan communities and villages.
