Police Digital Media Specialist

City of Covington, KY

Police Department

Part‑time

Hours: Monday through Friday, 20 hours a week within the office hours of 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (Evening, weekend or hours adjustments may be required as job duties demand)

Hourly Rate: $28.85 Benefits: Paid time off, and three paid holidays per year, after one year of service

Role Overview

The Police Digital Media Specialist reports to the Chief of Police (or a designee) and provides essential non-enforcement administrative support for the Body Worn Camera and digital media programs. Working closely with the Records Section and the Crime Lab, this position is responsible for redacting, organizing, and managing digital media files to fulfill public records and legal requests, while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and policies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, redact, and organize digital media files using platforms such as evidence.com and other redaction software.
  • Fulfill records requests from the public, attorneys, and law enforcement partners in accordance with state and federal law.
  • Research, verify, and compile requested media and documentation in response to subpoenas, discovery, and open records requests.
  • Communicate with other law enforcement agencies, attorneys, businesses, and private citizens for clarification of requests.
  • Organize digital media files and link them to relevant reports and case files; assign appropriate retention labels.
  • Ensure accurate storage and easy retrieval of body-worn camera footage and other digital media assets.
  • Assist with internal training on digital evidence protocols and ensure compliance with department standards.
  • Maintain accurate logs and documentation of redactions and media requests.
  • Ensure all body worn camera recording footage is properly documented and accessible.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of Federal and/or Kentucky Open Record Laws preferred.
  • Must be familiar with or able to operate a Body Worn Camera (BWC) equipment and software.
  • Awareness of current digital media, redaction, and open records law.

Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and digital media platforms.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Capable of managing multiple time-sensitive requests efficiently.
  • Ability to learn and apply redaction tools and related software.

Abilities:

  • Maintain strict confidentiality and use sound judgment with sensitive data.
  • Work independently and collaboratively within a professional setting.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with diverse individuals and agencies.
  • Handle sensitive or distressing video content with emotional maturity and discretion.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED (Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality in a professional setting.
  • Commitment to public service, accuracy, and community accountability.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in digital media, legal support, law enforcement, or records management.
  • Previous work with evidence management systems like evidence.com.
  • Familiarity with state and federal laws regarding public records.
  • Training or certification in digital evidence handling or video redaction.
