Performs diagnostic sleep studies related to the evaluation and treatment of patients with sleep disorders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT)through the Board of Registered Polysomnographic TechnologistsAND18 monthsSleep Lab experience

OR 

Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) through American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM)AND18monthsSleep Lab experience

OR

Respiratory therapist licensure as required by the state in which services will be provided:

WV:  Licensed Respiratory Therapist Registered (LRTR)or Licensed Respiratory TherapistCertified (LRTC)through the West Virginia Board of Respiratory Care ANDOne (1) year of RespiratoryTherapistexperience

PA: Respiratory Therapist through Pennsylvania State Board of MedicineANDOne (1) year of RespiratoryTherapistexperience

ANDRespiratory Therapist must be certifiedinONEof the following through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC):

  • Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT)

  • Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT)

  • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT)

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)

  • Registered Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS)

2. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within30 daysof hire date

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.Associates Degreein an Allied Health Field, or Graduate of a Respiratory Therapy program.2.Respiratory License.

3. ACLS Certification

1. Respiratory Therapist with1-2yearssleep labexperience

2. Hospital patient care work experience 

CORE JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.Other duties may be assigned.

  • 1. Assures the completion of all patient testing procedures at the Sleep Center and in the hospital ensuring high-quality and efficient studies.
  • 2. Ensures proper documentation in the Tech Notes, acquisition equipment and patient chart.
  • 3. Performs sleep studies in accordance with the policy and procedure guidelines of the Sleep Evaluation Center, at the bedside and in critical care areas of the hospital.
  • 4. Prepares initial data for use by the physician in the formulation of sleep reports according to established department guidelines.
  • 5. Uses AIDET Communications Process (acknowledge, introduce, duration, explanation and thank you) and informs the patient and family regarding the nature and significance of the study performed.
  • 6. Accurately observes, records, and reports all patient concerns, symptoms, and reactions in a timely manner.
  • 7. Demonstrates the knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department policies and procedures
  • 8. Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of the equipment, procedure rooms and work areas of the Sleep Evaluation Center.
  • 9. Maintains CEU requirements and participates in department education and in-services.
  • 10. Assists in the instruction and hands-on technical training of trainees, house-staff, and medical staff both inside and outside of the institution.
  • 11. Participates in meeting the goals and objectives of the work unit and department by volunteering to assist co-workers, contributing ideas and problem solving with co-workers, as observed by supervision.
  • 12. Scores sleep studies according to American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) guidelines.
