Project Title:
Unraveling the Mechanisms of Alcohol-Induced Blood-Brain

Barrier Disruption: A Focus on Lipid Signaling and Endothelial Cells

Position Summary:
Saint Louis University's Department of Neurology invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join our multidisciplinary team working on an NIH-funded project. The project investigates alcohol-induced cerebrovascular dysfunction, focusing on the role of lipid signaling in blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption and neuroinflammation. The postdoctoral fellow will be involved in MCAO surgeries, biochemical analysis, and behavioral testing in a cutting-edge research environment. This position offers an opportunity to conduct innovative research on the effects of alcohol exposure on cerebrovascular health and neuroinflammation.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion (MCAO) surgeries to model ischemic stroke in mice.

  • Conduct biochemical assays to analyze lipid signaling, enzyme expression, and oxidative stress markers in brain tissue.

  • Perform Western blotting, PCR, immunohistochemistry, and fluorescence imaging.

  • Coordinate and execute behavioral studies to assess cognitive and motor deficits, including Morris Water Maze (MWM), Novel Object Recognition (NOR), and Fear Conditioning Tests (FCT).

  • Collaborate with laboratory team members on experimental design, data analysis, and manuscript preparation.

  • Contribute to grant writing and publication of research findings in peer-reviewed journals.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Neuroscience, Neurobiology, or a related field.

  • Experience in surgical techniques, specifically MCAO, for stroke models in mice.

  • Strong background in biochemical assays, including Western blotting, PCR, and immunohistochemistry.

  • Experience with behavioral analysis in mice.

  • First-author publication history in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with a diverse team of researchers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with lipid signaling, autotaxin, and LPP3 pathways in cerebrovascular research.

  • Knowledge of animal models of neuroinflammation and ischemic stroke.

  • Familiarity with neuroimaging techniques and data analysis tools (e.g., ImageJ, GraphPad Prism).

Position Details:

  • Location: Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Department of Neurology, St. Louis, MO.

  • Full-time, 40 hours/week.

  • Compensation: Competitive salary with benefits.
