Job Description

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher position to work with Dr. Peter Zeidler and Dr. Elena Manjavacas and collaborators, including Drs. Mario Gennaro and James Muzerolle Page on spectroscopic studies of young, low-metallicity Brown Dwarfs in the young Small Magellanic Cloud Star Cluster NGC 602. This research exploits the synergy of NIRCam and NIRSpec to detect and characterize the first extragalactic young, low-metallicity Brown Dwarfs in this completely unexplored parameter space. This project will include the reduction and analysis of spectra obtained with NIRSpec MOS and the characterization of the spectral features. Two of the main goals are to find unique spectral characteristics of low-metallicity Brown Dwarfs and, together with the NIRCam photometry, to infer masses to create the first, low-metallicity, young Brown Dwarf spectral template catalog. Part of the time may be available for independent research or new projects in related areas. The nominal start date is expected to be in Summer 2026, but other dates are negotiable and the appointment is for two years.

The successful applicant will benefit from a stimulating work environment rich in colloquia, journal clubs, symposia, and learning opportunities related to the missions supported by STScI (HST, JWST, Roman). STScI also features close ties with neighboring Johns Hopkins University. STScI offers an excellent benefit package (including comprehensive healthcare and paid parental leave) and competitive salaries, commensurate to the year of Ph.D.

Any questions about the position should be directed to zeidler@stsci.edu.

Applicants shall hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, or related fields at the start of the position. Expertise in one or more of the following areas in desirable: (a) Brown Dwarf spectroscopic analysis, in particular of young or low-metallicity Brown Dwarfs; (b) JWST data reduction with emphasis on spectroscopy and NIRSpec/MOS; (c) young star clusters, their stellar and sub-stellar populations; (d) Brown Dwarf spectral fitting and modeling. More important is the willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, and work independently to bring these projects to fruition. Reference:HRC0015644

Applicants are requested to complete an on-line application through: https://stsci.slideroom.com/#/permalink/program/88302

The following materials will be requested in PDF format: a brief cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and a concise (1-3 page) statement of research interests, accomplishments, and relevant technical experience. Complete applications received by March 20, 2026, will receive full consideration. Also, applicants must arrange for three confidential letters of reference. Reference letters must be submitted by the same date via the on-line application system.

Questions regarding the application process can be sent directly to careers@stsci.edu.
