Job Description

Position: Pre-Licensed Radiology Technician - Temporary

Compensation:

The estimated pay for this position is $23.6780 to $31.8212. This reflects only a portion of the total compensation package for this position. Additional compensation may be available for this role through differentials, incentives, and bonuses.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is the intern level within the Radiologic Technologist classification series. Incumbents follow established procedures under close supervision and in a training capacity. Upon completion of appropriate State licensing requirements, incumbents may be promoted to the level of Radiological Technologist I, subject to recommendation by the department head and approval by the Vice President of Human Resources.

Essential Functions:

  • Documents all information on the patient's images, consents, and other medical records.
  • Corroborates patient's clinical history with procedure, ensuring information is documented and available for use by a licensed independent practitioner. Verifies informed consent.
  • Ensures the safety of the patient during the examination.
  • Prepares rooms and patients for radiographic examinations; calls patients to the Radiology Department and releases them to return to the appropriate unit or clinic upon completion of examination.
  • Leads patients to dressing rooms and gives directions before examination.
  • Moves patients from gurney/wheelchair to examination tables.
  • Applies principles of ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) to minimize radiation exposure of patient, self, and others.
  • Provides protection to patients according to prescribed safety standards; exercises personal safety precautions; shields and positions patients as required.
  • Assists in selecting proper technique and operation of radiology equipment to make radiographs of designated portions of the body as requested by the physician.
  • Assists in selecting and using proper immobilization and supportive devices when necessary; may use portable radiology equipment.
  • Selects proper film, machine position and exposure procedures for review and use by the Radiologic Technologist; prepares contrast agents for patients for examination; may assist radiologist/physician in special studies and procedures.
  • Reviews images for proper identification and quality; works in the control room to process radiographs when required.
  • Maintains equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Provides cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first-aid care to patients while in the department.
  • Dependent upon area of practice or department assignments, demonstrates clinical knowledge and skill in the care of newborn, infant, toddler, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient ranging up to 100+ years of age.

Other Functions:

  • Performs other job-related duties as required.

Employment Standards:

Pre-licensed: High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent. Current enrollment in final semester/quarter of an accredited two-year program in radiologic technology approved by the Joint Review Committee on Education, in good standing, and must obtain a license to practice as a Radiologic Technologist within six months.Possession and maintenance of a current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card.

Employees must maintain all health requirements designated by Kern Medical Center.

Depending on assignment incumbents may be required to possess and maintain specific certificates of competency as a condition of employment;

Knowledge of

Modern radiology equipment and techniques; human anatomy and physiology; occupational and safety precautions for radiologic work; acute care hospital procedures; effective verbal and written communication skills and computer skills.

Ability to

Administer emergency first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation; maintain records and files; follow instructions; ability to deal tactfully and professionally with patients, physicians and staff; maintain the strictest levels of confidentiality.

Employees must maintain all health requirements designated by Kern Medical;

Dependent upon assignment, applicants may be required to pass an extensive background investigation, and be fingerprinted.  Disqualification for felony, misdemeanor, and traffic offenses will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

All Kern Medical employees are designated “Disaster Service Workers” through state and local laws (CA Government Code Sec. 3100-3109 and Ordinance Code Title 2 - Administration, Ch. 2.66 Emergency Services.) As Disaster Service Workers, all county employees are expected to remain at work, or to report for work as soon as practicable following a significant emergency or disaster.

If position responsibilities require driving a personal vehicle, then possession of a current valid California Driver’s License and adherence to the Kern County Hospital Authority Vehicle Use and Driving Standard Policy (ENG-EC-119) is required.
