Role summary: As a Principal Software Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, driving cloud-native architecture and distributed system solutions that support long-term business objectives. This role requires overseeing the full software development lifecycle, integrating AI/ML technologies, and providing strategic technical leadership and mentorship across multiple teams. You will collaborate with stakeholders to translate complex problems into actionable solutions, ensuring high-quality, reliable software systems. Your expertise will advance innovation, operational excellence, and continuous improvement within a dynamic engineering environment. About the team: The Marketplace Engineering team develops and maintains core platforms supporting Walmart’s extensive product range and competitive pricing. This team manages the seller lifecycle, monitors customer interactions, and delivers insights to optimize assortment, pricing, and inventory. Collaborating with partner platform teams, they ensure seamless integration and continuous improvement of seller and customer experiences on walmart.com. Utilizing cloud-native architecture, software design patterns, and data-driven decision-making, the team builds scalable, resilient solutions that drive operational excellence and innovation across the marketplace ecosystem. What you'll do:- Lead platform engineering efforts to deliver scalable, cloud-native infrastructure and reusable tooling aligned with strategic roadmaps.
- Drive full software development lifecycle activities, including design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance across multiple teams.
- Architect and implement AI-enhanced applications and distributed systems optimized for real-time data processing and reliability.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams, promoting best practices and architectural consistency.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into actionable technical requirements and measurable success metrics.
- Foster continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance processes, tools, and product quality.
- Extensive experience in platform engineering leadership, delivering scalable, cloud-native architectures and reusable tooling.
- Proven expertise in designing and implementing distributed systems optimized for real-time data processing and AI/ML integration.
- Strong technical proficiency in multiple programming languages including Java, Python, JavaScript, Dart, Rust, and C++.
- Demonstrated ability to lead full software development lifecycles, including CI/CD, observability, and incident response.
- Skilled in applying model-driven design and leveraging AI agents to enhance software capabilities.
- Effective mentorship and leadership skills fostering engineering excellence and innovation.
- Strong collaboration and communication abilities with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Commitment to continuous improvement, technical ownership, and sound architectural decision-making.
