Principal Generator Design Engineer (Electromagnetics)
Thermal Systems Department | Ampera Clean Energy
354 Hiatt Dr suite 100, Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33418
About Ampera Clean Energy
Ampera Clean Energy is developing a modular power amplification system that uses nuclear heat input to drive supercritical CO₂ turbomachinery generators. Our work sits at the intersection of advanced rotating machinery, power electronics, thermal systems, and rapid prototyping. We design, build, and test first‑of‑a‑kind hardware to mature breakthrough energy technology from concept to deployment.
Position Summary
Ampera Clean Energy is seeking a Principal Generator Design Engineer (Electromagnetics) to lead the clean‑sheet electromagnetic design of MW-class custom electric generators. This role owns the electrical machine architecture and electromagnetic performance of large rotating generators, from initial concept through hardware testing and model correlation.
The ideal candidate has deep expertise in electrical machine theory, hands‑on experience designing large generators from first principles, and the judgment to make architecture decisions that persist through fabrication and test.
Remote Work
This is a design‑focused engineering role eligible for hybrid‑remote work at the discretion of the director. During periods of prototype builds, assembly, or test campaigns, extended on‑site presence will be required.
Key Responsibilities
Electric Generator Design & Analysis
  • Lead clean‑sheet design of MW-class electric generators, including topology selection (synchronous, permanent magnet, or hybrid architectures)
  • Perform electromagnetic design and analysis, including:
    • Stator and rotor configuration
    • Winding design and insulation systems
    • Magnetic materials selection
    • Loss modeling (copper, core, windage, stray)
  • Define electrical performance requirements including voltage, current, efficiency, thermal margins, and transient behavior
Electromagnetic Analysis & Modeling
  • Perform detailed electromagnetic analysis using analytical methods and numerical tools
  • Model and predict:
    • Copper, core, stray, and windage‑related electromagnetic losses
    • Flux distributions, saturation behavior, and thermal loss inputs
  • Correlate electromagnetic models to test data and drive iterative design improvement
Thermal & Mechanical Interface Definition (Electrical Ownership)
  • Define electrical loss breakdowns and thermal inputs for cooling system design
  • Specify allowable temperature limits, margins, and operating derates from an electrical perspective
  • Define electrical interface requirements for mechanical and structural teams, including
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical and thermal engineers while retaining clear EM ownership
Manufacturing Support & Test
  • Define electrical instrumentation and measurements for generator testing
  • Support electrical testing, data acquisition, and validation activities
  • Analyze test results, validate models, and refine electromagnetic designs
Required Qualifications
·       Experience designing electric motors or generators from concept to hardware release
·       Direct experience with large rotating machinery (multi‑MW preferred)
·       Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or closely related field
·       Proficiency with SolidWorks or equivalent CAD tools
·       Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
·       Experience supporting hardware testing in industrial, aerospace, energy, or heavy manufacturing environments
Why Join Ampera Clean Energy
·       Design multi‑megawatt generators with meaningful technical ownership
·       Work on cutting‑edge clean energy and nuclear‑adjacent technology
·       Gain hands‑on experience with advanced turbomachinery and power systems
·       Collaborate in a small, highly technical team where decisions directly shape the hardware
·       Make a direct impact on the future of high‑efficiency power generation
Salary Range
·      $160,000-$190,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications
