Job Description

Position: Prison Education Research Support Intern

Department: Wiggins Library

Status: Part Time

Position Summary:

The Second Chance Initiative Prison Education Research Support Intern at Wiggins Memorial Library at Campbell University supports incarcerated students fulfilling associate's and bachelor's degrees through Campbell's Second Chance Initiative prison education programs. The primary responsibilities of this individual will be gathering online and occasionally physical resources in response to student research assistance requests, providing those resources to students via Blackboard, and describing the search process to those students for their educational benefit. Most of this work will occur asynchronously and remotely, though timeliness is essential to the research process.

The Head of Research & Instruction Services at Wiggins Memorial Library will hire and formally supervise this intern. The Reference & Distance Learning Librarian will oversee this intern's work. The Assistant Dean of Prison Education and/or Site Director will provide additional oversight over research support for Second Chance Initiative students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Using the library's online resources to fulfill reference requests from Second Chance Initiative students

  • Writing thorough feedback to reference requests on Blackboard

  • Describing search strategies to students who do not have direct access to online resources

  • Engaging in training in Campbell's online resources and in reference services to better serve students

  • Other duties or projects as assigned in the realm of research and reference services to Second Chance Initiative students

  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times

  • Uphold and abide by Campbell University policies and procedures, including but not limited to Title IX, Information Security, FERPA guidelines, and other state and federal mandates.

  • Other job-related duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent required

  • Currently enrolled or recently graduates of a library science or information science program, or similar

  • Experience using online learning systems such as Blackboard is desirable

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Effective, clear, and illustrative written communication

  • Ability to conduct effective searches using library online resources

  • Knowledge of the relevant criteria for providing quality sources to students

  • Ability to deliver services with turnaround deadlines of no greater than a few days

  • Ability to self-manage time and workload

  • Ability to learn and train in a library environment

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • This position demands accuracy, honesty, integrity, and the ability to work within the Christian mission of Campbell University
