Position Overview: The Night Shift Inpatient Registered Nurse (RN) provides high-quality, patient-centered nursing care within a surgical hospital setting during overnight hours. This role is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for pre-operative, post-operative, and recovery patients throughout the night shift. The RN ensures patient safety, comfort, and well-being while maintaining continuity of care and compliance with clinical standards and hospital policies.
The ideal candidate demonstrates strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, and compassionate care, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced overnight environment. Responsibilities include monitoring patient conditions, administering medications and treatments, responding promptly to changes in patient status, documenting care accurately, and providing patient and family education as needed. The Night Shift RN works closely with physicians and interdisciplinary team members to support optimal patient outcomes and maintain a safe, healing environment during overnight operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Care Management:
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients admitted for surgical procedures.
- Assess patients' physical and emotional needs, including admission and post-operative assessments.
- Monitor vital signs and patient conditions, recognizing changes in status and intervening as necessary.
- Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with hospital protocols.
- Assist with wound care, pain management, and post-operative recovery.
- Educate patients and their families on surgical procedures, recovery expectations, and discharge plans.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and other healthcare team members.
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and contribute to patient care decisions.
- Clinical Expertise and Safety:
- Ensure adherence to infection control and safety protocols.
- Perform patient assessments, document nursing interventions, and track patient progress.
- Respond to medical emergencies, assist in code situations, and provide appropriate interventions.
- Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely patient records in compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
- Patient Advocacy and Emotional Support:
- Advocate for patients’ rights and provide emotional support during their hospitalization.
- Address patients' concerns and comfort needs to ensure a positive hospital experience.
- Provide education on post-surgical care, medication management, and follow-up appointments.
- Continuing Education and Development:
- Stay current on surgical procedures, nursing best practices, and hospital policies.
- Participate in ongoing education, training, and certifications as required by the hospital and regulatory agencies.
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required.
- Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required
- Experience:
- Previous nursing experience in a surgical or inpatient setting preferred.
- Experience with post-operative care, pain management, and wound care is highly desirable.
- Skills:
- Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
Working Conditions:
- This is a full-time position with rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Must be able to lift and move patients as needed.
- The RN may be exposed to potentially infectious materials, hazardous chemicals, and other environmental risks.
