Job Description
We are looking for a Purchasing Agent with experience in structural steel fabrication to support material procurement and vendor coordination. This role is responsible for sourcing steel materials, interpreting fabrication drawings, and ensuring accurate material reserves to support production. The position works closely with detailing, production, and project teams to maintain workflow efficiency and prevent material shortages. This is a hands-on role suited for someone who understands structural steel components and can work directly from fabrication prints and shop drawings.
Responsibilities
- Review structural steel drawings, fabrication prints, and marked-up plans to determine material requirements
- Perform material takeoffs for beams, columns, assemblies, and related components
- Place and manage purchase orders for steel materials based on production schedules and project needs
- Scrub drawings and review NC1 files, CAD files, and shop details for accuracy before procurement
- Coordinate with vendors to confirm pricing, availability, and delivery timelines
- Track all material orders, deliveries, and supplier commitments to ensure alignment with project schedules
- Maintain inventory levels and allocate materials to active jobs based on production demand
- Work closely with detailing and production teams to verify quantities and resolve discrepancies
- Negotiate pricing and terms with suppliers to support cost control and margin targets
- Communicate material status, risks, and delays to internal stakeholders including project managers and leadership
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience in structural steel fabrication, steel construction, or related industry
- Ability to read and interpret structural steel drawings, shop drawings, and fabrication prints
- Experience reviewing NC1 files, CAD drawings, or detailing outputs preferred
- Strong understanding of material takeoffs for steel components (beams, columns, plates, assemblies)
- Experience with purchasing or procurement in a fabrication or construction environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and standard procurement systems
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify discrepancies in drawings and material quantities
- Effective communication and negotiation skills with vendors and internal teams
