Job Description

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

Overview

This is an ideal role for someone early in their career who wants to build a foundation in digital video. You'll work across breaking news, enterprise and planned coverage, helping translate AP's journalism into formats that connect with audiences everywhere.

A key part of the role is understanding the difference between B2C video (direct-to-audience content on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and APNews.com) and B2B video (serving AP's member newsrooms and clients worldwide). You'll learn to balance both.

Responsibilities

In this role you'll:

  • Produce, edit and publish entertainment-driven video across APNews.com, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook

  • Work on breaking news, quickly turning around accurate and compelling video

  • Write headlines, captions and scripts that are clear and engaging

  • Ensure all video meets AP standards for accuracy, fairness and visual quality

  • Support video output for AP's member newsrooms and clients while also creating direct-to-audience content

  • Monitor performance and audience trends to inform future video decisions

  • Collaborate with reporters, editors, photographers and graphics teams across the newsroom

  • Work nights, weekends and extended hours when news demands

What you'll gain

This role offers:

  • Hands-on experience producing video in a global newsroom

  • Exposure to a wide range of coverage including breaking news, politics, international, business, sports and culture

  • Mentorship from experienced video editors and newsroom leaders

  • Experience creating video for multiple platforms and audiences

  • A strong foundation in digital video production and news judgment

What we're looking for

You bring:

  • Some prior experience in video production: internships, freelance, school media or entry-level professional work

  • Proficiency with video editing tools. Familiarity with After Effects, Canva or other quick-turn design tools is a plus

  • Interest in news and how video can help audiences understand it

  • Familiarity with social and digital video platforms

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work under deadline pressure

  • Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced newsroom

Preferred

  • Previous experience producing video for digital and social platforms

  • Basic understanding of analytics and video performance

  • Comfort working with engagement data and adapting content accordingly

  • Some familiarity with motion graphics or design templates

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in video production, journalism, digital media or related field

  • Ability to work nights and weekends as news demands, particularly during live entertainment coverage

  • Commitment to inclusive storytelling and AP's standards of fairness and accuracy

  • Ability to work in the U.S. or gain necessary permission

We encourage applications from candidates who bring different perspectives and backgrounds. Even if you don't meet every qualification, we want to hear from you; this role is designed as a growth opportunity.

This position is covered by The Associated Press' contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary for Class A staff of between $53,477 and $85,214 based on location and years of professional experience. Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan and employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
