Job Description

At Maersk, we are rethinking how energy is traded, managed, and consumed across our global operations. Maersk Oil Trading manages an expanding portfolio of marine fuels, distillates, crude, and emerging low-carbon alternatives such as methanol, LNG, and biofuels traded from Copenhagen, Singapore, and the Americas. The Product Control team is the custodian of the traded P&L, giving the business daily transparency over trading economics, market exposures, and performance. We are looking for a Student Assistant to support the team in Copenhagen across data, analytics, and documentation.

This is a genuine learning role. You will work alongside experienced product controllers, see how a trading floor measures and reports its performance, and build practical skills in data handling, reporting, and control processes. It is well suited to a student in finance, economics, data, or a related field who wants hands-on exposure to commodity trading and to grow their analytical and technical toolkit in a supportive team. The role is cross-team by design: you will support colleagues across P&L production, Systems & Process, and Market Risk, which gives broad exposure to how the whole function fits together

Key Responsibilities

Data and Analytics Support

  • Contribute to analytical tasks that support the desk and the control function - for example, summarising daily P&L drivers, comparing realised prices against forward curves and benchmarks (Brent, Gasoil, Fuel Oil), tracking exposures and limit usage across books, investigating P&L or position breaks, and preparing charts and summaries to answer ad-hoc questions from traders, Risk, and management.
  • Help gather, clean, and organise trade, price, and position data from our systems into consistent, usable formats.
  • Support daily and monthly reporting by running recurring data checks and exception reports - confirming data is complete, reconciles to source, and flagging anything unusual for a controller to review.
  • Assist in building and maintaining Excel and Power BI outputs used by the team, under the guidance of the reporting owner.

Documentation and Process Support

  • Use your coding and AI skills to help the team automate manual and repetitive tasks, improving the efficiency and reliability of our processes.
  • Create and maintain clear documentation of our control processes, procedures, and system steps , keeping notes, checklists, and reference material current as procedures evolve.

Cross-Team Support

  • Provide general support to product controllers across P&L, Systems & Process, and Market Risk as workload requires.
  • Help with recurring operational tasks so the team can focus on analysis and control during busy periods such as month-end.
  • Take on ad-hoc project and improvement work suited to your skills and interests as they develop.

Who We're Looking For

Education and Skills

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree in finance, economics, data science, mathematics, engineering, or a related field, with at least one year of study remaining.
  • Comfortable with Excel and confident working with data.
  • Working knowledge of Python, and experience using AI tools to solve problems, automate tasks, and improve productivity. Exposure to Power BI or SQL is an advantage.
  • An interest in financial markets, commodities, or trading, and a willingness to learn how they work.
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical, reliable approach to routine tasks.
  • Good written English and the ability to document things clearly.

Personal Attributes

  • Curious and eager to learn, with the confidence to ask questions.
  • Organised and dependable, able to manage recurring tasks alongside your studies.
  • A collaborative team player, comfortable supporting several colleagues across different areas.
  • Proactive, with a positive attitude towards taking on new tasks and improving how things are done

We Offer

A rare chance to see, first-hand, how a global energy trading business measures and controls its performance. You will work directly with an experienced team, be given real responsibility, and receive the guidance and mentoring to grow into it. We offer flexible hours that work around your studies and exam periods, a genuinely collaborative and inclusive environment, and a role that can grow with you as your skills develop. For the right person, a student position in the team can be an excellent foundation for a future career in Product Control, Risk, or trading
