Job Description
Location: Cupertino, CA
Introduction
Client is seeking a contract product design engineer to join the Retail and Events Product Design (REPD) team on a temporary basis, providing coverage on an active program. We are a diverse group of engineers who design and develop integrated hardware solutions for retail spaces and special Client events like new product announcements, developer conferences, and store openings. We're looking for someone who can step into ongoing work with minimal ramp time and apply existing knowledge across material selection, machine design, manufacturing processes, stress and failure analyses, PCB integration, and cosmetic finishing.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline
- 8 years demonstrated mechanical design experience
- Strong analytical/problem-solving skills, with the judgment to work independently on ambiguous or partially documented problems
- Proficiency with 3D CAD modeling systems and workflows
- Ability to travel domestically
- Experience with consumer electronics or retail fixture products
- Experience working with contract manufacturers
- Demonstrated ability in plastic and metal part design, including material selection
- Experience with DFM, DFA, statistical tolerance analysis, functional dimensioning, and GD&T
- Experience with component modules (connectors, batteries, electronics packaging, PCBAs)
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimal onboarding support, quickly absorbing project context and vendor relationships already in progress
- Strong track record collaborating across multi-functional teams (Industrial Design, Operations, external suppliers) without close oversight
- Ability to clearly articulate design issues and status, both verbally and in documentation, to a team you're joining mid-project
- Prior work experience at client or in client's Industry

- Experience with detailed design work on parts/assemblies already in progress
- Experience building and evaluating physical prototypes for functionality, manufacturability, and performance
- Experience coordinating directly with existing operations teams and external vendors
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Picking up and continuing detailed design work on parts/assemblies already in progress, with minimal handoff time
- Creating and maintaining 3D CAD models and 2D drawings for parts and assemblies
- Building and evaluating physical prototypes for functionality, manufacturability, and performance
- Coordinating directly with existing operations teams and external vendors to keep manufacturing and assembly processes on schedule
- Reviewing and analyzing data from lab experiments and vendor builds to support engineering decisions already underway
- Traveling domestically to vendor sites as needed to support builds or root-cause failure investigations
