Job Description:

The Product Owner (PO) at Broadcom sits between the Product Manager (PM) and the Development Team. The PO's primary responsibility and value come from understanding and contributing towards the product strategy, and then executing that strategy by breaking down large strategic ideas and intentions into development items with concrete outcomes and then further into manageable work items-such as enablers or user stories-with the development team. The role requires a PO to navigate priorities across the mainframe software portfolio. Broadcom's Precision design system is a modern user interface framework, including both design assets and developer SDK, that delivers a consistent and intuitive user experience adopted by over 35 mainframe products in the Mainframe Software Portfolio. These distinct products are consumers of Precision assets, and by understanding all of the varied personas and use cases along with the value of the capability in the market, the PO is to prioritize features and capabilities across the development roadmap. Delivering user experiences that differentiate from the competition and are realized in the market within the solutions at the right time. This role requires negotiation across value streams and offering teams.

The PO is the voice of the customer to the development and engineering processes, ensuring the right work is done at the right time to achieve the best outcomes for our customers-both external users and internal product teams who consume Precision assets.

Product Owner Core Responsibilities

  • Operates as part of an extended Product Management team, usually reporting to Product Management.

  • Understands how the Enterprise backlog model operates with Epics, Capabilities, Features, and User Stories.

  • Uses Program Increment (PI) Objectives and Iteration Goals to communicate with management.

  • Establishes and sequences backlog items based on program priorities, events, and dependencies with other teams.

  • Coordinates with other Product Owners, the System Team, and shared services in the Agile Release Train (ART) PI Planning meetings.

  • Works with other Product Owners and the Product Management team throughout each Iteration and PI.

  • The Product Owner owns the Definition of Done (DoD) and sets clear Acceptance Criteria, ultimately holding final authority to accept or reject completed user stories at the end of sprints.

Team Backlog Ownership

  • The principal responsibility of the PO is to maintain a backlog of work items with order and detail sufficient for the team to work on for the current and next iteration. A story must satisfy the team's definition of ready.

Cross-Team and Management Reporting

  • To maintain cadence across many teams globally, PO communication is key to ensure inter-team dependencies are communicated and risks to team productivity are shared and mitigated. The PO is responsible for raising information to enable management by exception and is accountable for communication with their PO peers, PM's, engineering managers and Mainframe executives if needed.

Customer Engagement

  • Our business success is driven by our customers and in turn by their success. In order to ensure our products solve our customers' challenges we continually iterate on our solutions asking our customers for their feedback.

  • A PO works with their PM and field peers, creating opportunities to visit customers and observe users in their environment whenever possible.

  • Regular Sprint Reviews are one of the responsibilities of the PO who decides when it is appropriate to share progress and with which internal and external stakeholders. In establishing the Sprint Review event, the PO will invite their customers describing the value they may expect to receive. Typically performed over Zoom, a Sprint Review will showcase the most recent development.

  • When a support case is escalated to the development team for further action, the PO must be aware of the case and may manage the case to completion.

Collaboration with Product Manager(s), Engineering Manager(s) and Executives

The Product Owner stands back to back with the Product Manager(s) and Engineering Managers(s), working together on the same broader problems but each tackling different areas of work and levels of detail. While the Product Manager(s) are considered 'outward facing' meeting potential customers and buyers, the Product Owner is considered 'inward facing,' focused on existing customers and colleagues in development and support. The Product Manager(s) answers the question "Why" do we choose to do this. This PO role will collaborate across many product managers and solution areas to negotiate business priorities and partners with cross value stream engineering leads and executives to secure the right priority and decision when this is needed.

Collaboration with Development Team

Consisting of architects, UX designers, developers, QA, Information Engineers and R&D management, the Development Team produces the vast majority of consumable output and answers the question "How" will this thing get done.

Requirements:

  • Bachelors in Engineering and 8+ years of related experience; or Masters degree and 6+ years of related experience
