Project Engineer 2 – Pit Renovation | Nuclear Infrastructure (DOE/LANL)
Location: Los Alamos, NM | Hybrid (On-site + Remote)
Compensation: Salary – Commensurate with experience
Schedule: Full-time | 1-Year Contract with 2-Year Option
Experience: 2–5 years
Education: 4-Year Degree Required - Engineering Field
Travel: Per Diem paid when required to travel to vendor sites
Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship Required
Clearance: Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance
WHY THIS ROLE
This position supports the renovation of 30 nuclear pits at Los Alamos National Laboratory - one of the lab's highest-priority nuclear infrastructure programs. As a PE2, you'll manage engineering functions across all phases of the renovation, coordinating with nuclear safety, radiological controls, mechanical systems, and vendor teams in a highly regulated environment. This is a genuine ownership role for an engineer ready to make an impact on a national security mission.
TOP PRIORITY QUALIFICATIONS
- #1 - Glovebox Experience: Hands-on experience designing, modifying, or maintaining glovebox systems in a nuclear or radiological environment
- #2 - Nuclear Engineering Experience: Engineering experience within a nuclear facility or DOE/NRC-regulated environment
- #3 - Mechanical / HVAC Engineering: Background in HVAC design, confinement ventilation, or environmental control systems for nuclear or classified facilities
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Manage engineering functions across all phases of the 30-pit renovation project at LANL
- Coordinate design reviews, technical submittals, and engineering change documentation
- Interface with nuclear safety, radiological control, and quality assurance teams
- Support glovebox design modifications, maintenance planning, and operational readiness
- Oversee mechanical and HVAC systems engineering for confinement and process areas
- Travel to vendor sites as required to witness fabrication, testing, and acceptance activities (per diem provided)
- Prepare and review engineering calculations, specifications, drawings, and procedures
- Support project scheduling, cost tracking, and reporting to project management
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Required:
- S. Citizenship and ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance
- 4-year Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Nuclear, Chemical, or related field)
- 2–5 Years of progressive engineering experience
- Hybrid schedule - combination of on-site (Los Alamos, NM) and remote work
Preferred:
- Glovebox design, modification, or maintenance experience
- Nuclear engineering or DOE/NRC-regulated facility background
- Mechanical/HVAC design experience in nuclear or classified environments
- Familiarity with DOE Orders, nuclear criticality safety, or radiological work controls
