Job Description
Summary
Our client in Long Beach, CA is seeking a Project Engineer to support marine construction projects. This role focuses on field coordination, production tracking, safety compliance, and ensuring work is completed efficiently and according to project specifications. The Project Engineer will serve as the communication link between the field and office, support superintendents and foremen, maintain production records, assist with scheduling and materials, and may serve as the SSHO or QC Manager on USACE projects in compliance with EM 385-1-1 requirements.
Duties & Responsibilities
Quality & Safety Compliance
Enforce MSHA, OSHA, Corps of Engineers, and company safety policies
Participate in and lead safety meetings
Monitor field activities for compliance
Prepare and maintain required safety documentation
Support quality standards and ensure work meets project specifications
Field Coordination
Assist superintendent and foremen with planning and executing daily tasks
Coordinate labor, equipment, and materials
Communicate with Project Manager and quarry operations for material sourcing
Verify field conditions and adjust work plans as needed for safety and efficiency
Production Tracking & Reporting
Maintain detailed daily logs of crew activities, production quantities, and equipment usage
Track material quantities and document for payment
Monitor progress against production goals and report variances
Surveying
Perform progress surveys to verify installation of work
Prepare cross sections and bathymetry maps
Support project documentation for Project Manager and client
Scheduling & Planning
Assist in preparing, updating, and maintaining project schedules
Identify potential delays and help develop corrective actions
Other Duties
Provide technical support for layout, surveying, and documentation
Assist with project documentation such as as-builts and progress photos
Ability to work out of town for extended periods (accommodations provided)
Weekend work may be required depending on project needs
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
Minimum 5 years of combined marine or heavy civil construction experience (Field Engineer, Project Engineer, Superintendent, Construction Manager, or PM roles)
Valid California Driver’s License meeting company fleet standards
Ability to obtain TWIC credential
Proficient in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam
Strong construction document control experience (RFIs, submittals, change orders, progress payments, contracts)
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working on USACE projects
Familiarity with EM 385-1-1 requirements
Completed EM 385-1-1 training for SSHO or QC roles
Surveying experience (hydrographic or topographic)
Experience with Hypack
Estimating experience using HeavyBid
Scheduling experience using Excel, MS Project, and Primavera P6
Physical Requirements
Ability to walk, bend, squat, lift, push, pull, and climb frequently
Ability to lift 50 lbs
Ability to communicate effectively
Ability to climb in and out of marine equipment
