Job Description

SEG is seeking a Project Engineer I to join our team in Hamilton, Virginia.

The Project Engineer I is a developmental construction management position designed for an early-career professional looking to build hands-on experience managing commercial and institutional construction projects.

Working alongside SEG’s Project Managers, Superintendents, and field teams, the Project Engineer will gain exposure to all phases of construction—from estimating and preconstruction through project execution and closeout. This position is intended to provide the experience and management skills necessary to grow within SEG’s Project Management or Field Operations teams.

What You’ll Do

  • Support Project Managers and Superintendents throughout all phases of construction
  • Coordinate and track RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and other project documentation
  • Maintain project logs, controls, and documentation
  • Assist with subcontractor pricing, buyout, purchase orders, and subcontract administration
  • Support change management, including obtaining pricing, preparing estimates and proposals, and maintaining change documentation
  • Assist with quantity takeoffs and project estimating
  • Help develop and maintain project schedules
  • Review drawings, specifications, and shop drawings to support coordination of the work
  • Assist with project constructability reviews and value-engineering opportunities
  • Help identify potential project issues and work with the team to develop solutions
  • Support project closeout and turnover activities
  • Participate in project and staff meetings
  • Visit project sites as needed throughout the region

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, with 0–3 years of commercial or industrial construction experience; OR 5+ years of directly related experience without a degree
  • Basic understanding of construction means, methods, drawings, and specifications
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with project teams, subcontractors, and clients
  • Comfortable working with spreadsheets and construction-related software
  • Ability and willingness to travel to project sites within the region
  • EIT or other construction industry certification is a plus
  • OSHA 30, First Aid/CPR, and USACE/NAVFAC CQM certifications are preferred or may be obtained as part of professional development

Why SEG?

SEG performs commercial and institutional construction with a strong focus on federal government projects, including work for agencies such as GSA, NPS, and USACE.

As a smaller company, our Project Engineers have the opportunity to work closely with experienced Project Managers and Superintendents and gain exposure to more than one piece of the construction process. This is a position for someone who wants to learn, take on increasing responsibility, and develop into a future Project Manager or Superintendent.
