First Step House is Hiring a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner!Salt Lake City, UT | Part-Time | 36-Hour Work WeekPay: $65–$70 per hour

At First Step House, we help people build lives of meaning, purpose, and recovery.We are looking for a compassionate and experienced Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to join our Medical Clinic. This role provides an opportunity to work with individuals who often face significant barriers to healthcare, including people experiencing homelessness, individuals transitioning from incarceration or detox, and people living in permanent supportive housing.Our clients may be managing both substance use disorders and serious mental health conditions, and many have experienced gaps in consistent medical care. As a PMHNP, you'll have the opportunity to provide thoughtful, integrated psychiatric care while working alongside therapists and other members of our treatment teams.If you are passionate about recovery-oriented care, enjoy working with complex populations, and want your clinical expertise to make a meaningful difference, we'd love to hear from you.About the RoleThe PMHNP provides psychiatric care to First Step House clients who are receiving services across our programs. This includes individuals receiving treatment for substance use disorders who also experience co-occurring mental health conditions, as well as individuals living in our permanent supportive housing programs who have serious mental illness.You will work independently to assess, diagnose, prescribe, and monitor psychiatric medications, while collaborating closely with therapists and other members of the client's treatment team to provide safe, coordinated, and person-centered care.This role requires an understanding of the complex needs of individuals impacted by mental illness, substance use, homelessness, and other barriers to care. Strong professional boundaries, sound clinical judgment, and a commitment to ethical and compassionate care are essential.What You'll DoClinical CareConduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and assessments, including developing differential diagnoses.Assess clients' mental health and overall well-being while considering physical, psychological, and social factors.Diagnose mental health and substance use conditions using appropriate clinical and diagnostic tools, including the DSM-5-TR.Prescribe psychiatric medications and monitor client response, effectiveness, and potential side effects.Order, administer, and analyze appropriate diagnostic testing.Complete suicide risk assessments and screenings when clinically indicated.Develop individualized care plans and contribute to existing treatment plans.Educate clients about mental health conditions, medications, treatment options, coping strategies, and self-care.Provide medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorders after completing required training.Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the Electronic Health Record.Collaboration & CoordinationWork closely with therapists, treatment teams, and other First Step House departments to coordinate client care.Communicate clinical recommendations and relevant information with members of the client's treatment team.Support integrated mental health and substance use disorder treatment.Maintain strong, positive, client-centered relationships while establishing appropriate professional boundaries.Participate in a collaborative, recovery-oriented culture focused on helping clients achieve stability and meaningful recovery.Professional ResponsibilitiesMaintain current knowledge of psychiatric medications, evidence-based treatment practices, and standards of care relevant to the First Step House population.Maintain all required professional licenses, certifications, and registrations.Follow applicable legal, ethical, privacy, and confidentiality requirements, including HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2.Maintain knowledge of First Step House policies, program expectations, client rights, and applicable regulatory requirements.Maintain accurate scheduling and organization of clinical responsibilities.Use the Electronic Health Record and other required clinical and office systems effectively.What We're Looking ForThe ideal candidate is someone who:Is compassionate, recovery-oriented, and committed to serving underserved populations.Understands the complex relationship between mental health and substance use disorders.Has strong clinical judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.Communicates effectively with clients and multidisciplinary treatment teams.Maintains strong professional and interpersonal boundaries.Is organized and able to manage multiple clinical responsibilities.Can work independently while remaining highly collaborative.Is comfortable working with individuals who may have had limited or inconsistent access to healthcare.Demonstrates an Outward Mindset in interactions with clients, coworkers, and community partners.QualificationsEducation & ExperienceMust have 3–5 years of experience working as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).Must be licensed as a PMHNP in the State of Utah and be Board Certified with a valid NPI.Graduate of an accredited PMHNP program.Knowledge of Medicaid billing requirements and procedures.Must hold a current Controlled Substance License and DEA registration with no disciplinary action.To learn more about our organization, visit: www.firststephouse.orgFor employee testimonials and additional opportunities: https://firststephouse.org/employment-opportunities/First Step House is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
