Public Health & Community Health Worker Intern 

Organization: The Happier Life Project 

Program: Elevate Youth California (EYC) 

Classification: Temporary, Part-Time, Grant-Funded 

Compensation: $23/hour 

Schedule: 15 hours per week 

Location: Riverside County (Hybrid / Community-Based) 

Eligibility: Youth ages 18–26 

The Happier Life Project is recruiting a Public Health & Community Health Worker (CHW) Intern for its Elevate Youth California program. This paid, part-time internship is designed for college-level students or recent graduates interested in community health, prevention, and wellness education. 

POSITION OVERVIEW 

 The Public Health & CHW Intern supports youth-centered prevention and wellness initiatives through health education, outreach, and community engagement activities. Interns in this role help deliver culturally responsive health information, facilitate youth-led wellness activities, and assist with outreach efforts focused on behavioral health and substance use prevention. 

 Interns will participate in wellness workshops, community outreach events, and youth engagement activities that address social determinants of health and promote community well-being. This role provides hands-on experience in public health education, prevention programming, and community health outreach.  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Support planning and facilitation of youth-focused wellness workshops and educational sessions 

  • Assist with community outreach and engagement activities related to behavioral health and substance use prevention 

  • Develop or contribute to culturally responsive health education materials and resource guides 

  • Co-facilitate youth groups or prevention programming under staff supervision 

  • Support community events such as health fairs, school presentations, and outreach campaigns 

  • Assist with tracking participation and engagement in outreach and wellness activities 

  • Contribute to community needs assessments and resource mapping efforts 

  • Participate in listening sessions and community feedback processes related to youth health needs 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE 

Preferred Education Pathways  

  • Applicants are typically: 

  • College juniors or seniors 

  • Community college students preparing to transfer 

  • Recent graduates (within the last 2–3 years) 
  • Relevant Fields of Study May Include 
  • Public Health 

  • Community Health or Health Promotion 

  • Behavioral Health or Prevention Science 

  • Social Work 

  • Community Psychology 

  • Sociology or Social Justice Studies 

  • Health Education 

  • Human Services 

Equivalent Experience Considered 

Youth with lived experience in community advocacy, peer support, prevention work, or community organizing may be considered in place of formal education. 

IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE 

  • Interest in public health, prevention, and community wellness 

  • Strong communication and community engagement skills 

  • Comfort speaking with youth and community members in outreach settings 

  • Interest in addressing social determinants of health and behavioral health disparities 

  • Commitment to culturally responsive and trauma-informed approaches 

  • Ability to work collaboratively with peers, staff, and community partners 

This role is part of a grant-funded workforce development program designed for young adults ages 18–26. Applicants must meet the grant’s eligibility criteria to be considered. 

This is a non-clinical, non-medical position focused on prevention education, community outreach, and leadership development.
