Overview

In this role, you will partner with the head of Esri’s Influence Marketing team to help develop and implement Esri’s media relations and external communications strategy. Lead our in-house media relations team to support the execution of the strategy. Identify, develop, and nurture strong relationships with editors and reporters for global, national, top tier, non-traditional media outlets and industry publications. Help take our media success to the next by navigating the new media landscape of blogs, podcasts, and substacks.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team. Coach, mentor, and lead the media relations team. Foster a positive and trusting environment that supports innovation and employee engagement. Support onboarding, career development, and performance management. Promote a diverse and inclusive environment for your team through a culture of empathy, respect, and collaboration.
  • Be an expert. Serve as a point of contact for public relations inquiries and activities, both inside and outside of Esri. Continuously develop your understanding of GIS to effectively communicate Esri’s mission and technology to a wide range of audiences. Oversee the writing of press releases and other communication documents through your team. Represent PR at Esri events and in various strategic initiatives.
  • Drive results. Oversee the creation and management of communication plans for events, campaigns, and initiatives across the global Esri organization. Identify and manage opportunities for press interviews at Esri and during events. Use strong networking skills to identify subject matter experts and interview subjects within Esri and the GIS user community.
  • Communicate and collaborate. Build relationships and partner with the most senior executive business leaders across Esri to implement communication strategies and tactics. Maintain relationships with key media, bloggers, and influencers. Leverage expertise to communicate with press to elevate Esri brand.
  • Strategic thought leadership. Work with the Influence Marketing leadership team to create a business plan identifying annual opportunities, objectives, budgets, and goals. Analyze results and implement workflow improvements. Maintain awareness of industry trends and integrate them into strategic planning efforts.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience working in media relations
  • 3+ years of experience coaching and mentoring a team
  • Demonstrated success of securing media placements and working with executive level stakeholders
  • Demonstrated innovative approach to communications strategy for technology companies
  • Experience in journalist style writing and storytelling
  • Ability to work on and oversee multiple projects at a time and with tight deadlines
  • Availability to travel 20% of the time to serve as lead of PR for Esri
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, English, or related field

  • PR agency and in-house (B2B) experience for technology companies
  • Experience overseeing vendor contracts
  • Understanding of GIS, mapping, and location analytics
  • Understanding of Esri’s technology, products, and services
  • Master’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, English, or related field
