Job Description
Under general supervision of the Public Safety Training Sergeant, provides protection and assistance to students utilizing the crosswalks at designated locations with the City of Grand Haven. Seasonal position during school year.
Essential Job Functions
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.1. Enforces parking ordinances for all City owned parking lots, streets, and handicapped parking violations in private parking lots.2. Investigates abandoned vehicle complaints.3. Completes the legal process for impounded and abandoned vehicles.4. Acts as adult school crossing guard as assigned.5. Attends reception desk, greets people, answers telephone and relays messages to appropriate personnel; answers general inquires and complaints and refers the more difficult inquires to appropriate personnel or supervisor.6. Enters confidential records on public safety computer network.7. Files departmental correspondence; generates searches for files as requested.8. Files confidential public safety records and maintain support index system.9. Assembles correspondence, informational reports and related requests from source documents; uses standard office equipment to assemble facts and figures into a relevant document on a predetermined format.10. Assists with licenses and permits as provided under City ordinances and Departmental policy.11. Provides general information to other agencies and the public either in writing or verbally regarding City and departmental policies, ordinances, directions and related incidental information.12. Collects fees and deposits to the City treasury.13. Checks and provides public information documents on request by and for the public.14. Composes correspondence; types a variety of reports and material from rough draft reviewing for correct structure, grammar, math and format.15. Sorts and distributes mail to appropriate personnel as needed.16. Performs various errands for the department; picks up mail, supplies; distributes flyers, letters, memorandums, etc.17. Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required Education, Training and Experience

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities and minimum qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. Required Knowledge and Skills
1. High School diploma/GED. 2. Must be at least 18 years of age.3. Successfully complete certification as an adult school crossing guard.4. Ability to walk for an entire shift.5. Ability to firmly and impartially enforce parking regulations.6. Ability to deal courteously with the public and the interpersonal skills to work effectively with co-workers.7. Good communication skills.8. Possession of a current valid driver's license.
9. Must be interested in pursuing a law enforcement career.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.1. Climate-controlled indoor environment (approx. 50 percent of work time) during a 4 to 8-hour period, leaving the premises only for parking enforcement and adult crossing guard duties, and as directed by a superior officer on Public Safety Department related activities.2. Although this position may involve being sworn to enforce city ordinance violations, this position is not authorized to make custody arrests.Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations, including, but not limited to, visual and/or audio logical appliances and devices to increase mobility. Exposure to bodily fluids, with possible exposure to a variety of disease agents and to bloodborne pathogens.
