Public Works II(PW II) – Public Works Maintenance

Department: Public Works

Reports To: Mike Rowe

Supervisory Responsibilities: N/A

Work Environment: Varied. Work is frequently performed around hazardous machinery and can involve some threat to personal safety if safety standards are not observed. Work frequently is performed in inclement weather. Work involves responding to emergencies.

Summary

Assist the Public Works team primarily with the maintenance of our two (2) Township pool facilities. Operate light, medium or skilled equipment with little or no supervision, perform maintenance and repair projects, routine preventive maintenance tasks on Township vehicles, equipment, and facilities, and related functions.

Essential functions

  1. Operate light, medium or skilled equipment with little or no supervision that may include pickup trucks for hauling, plowing, snow blowers, and salt spreading; and/or commercial mowers and related landscape equipment for mowing operations, ball field maintenance, playground maintenance, swimming pool maintenance, pavilion maintenance, landscape maintenance, hauling and spreading of materials, and trailering equipment.
  2. Perform a variety of maintenance and repair projects on streets, parks, swimming pools, and other public areas in accordance with demands, weather emergencies and department priorities. Maintain conditions of streets, parks, facilities and other public areas, including patching roadways, repairing storm sewer inlets and pipes, inspecting and repairing playgrounds, repairing pavilions, tree and landscape maintenance, and athletic field and court repairs.
  3. Perform routine preventive maintenance tasks on Township vehicles, equipment and facilities that might include tasks such as check oil levels, check tire chains, wash vehicle windows, check condition of lights, check plow bolts, check air pressure in tires; wash, wax and grease equipment; clean vehicle interior and report problems requiring attention.
  4. Identify and report problems of maintenance for streets, parks, equipment and other public areas. Diagnose nature of problems and take action or recommend course of action to the Crew Leader or Foreman.
  5. Respond to emergencies to perform assigned maintenance tasks.
  6. Perform snow removal duties during winter season by shoveling, snow blowing, plowing and spreading materials on roads and sidewalks.

Other functions

  1. Attend training seminars and participate in on-the-job training to develop skills and knowledge and assist in providing training to other employees.

Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to demonstrate physical fitness to include occasional heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.), standing and walking for long periods of time, bending, pushing and pulling.
  2. Ability to reach with hands and arms, push items overhead, stoop, kneel, or bend.
  3. Dexterity is mandatory as this job requires frequent use of hands and fingers.
  4. Ability to talk, hear and see.
  5. Ability to operate light and medium skilled equipment including, but not limited to riding and push mowers, tractors, loaders and trucks.
  6. Ability to maintain a valid PA driver's license.

Competencies

  1. Ability to operate light and medium skilled equipment including, but not limited to riding and push mowers, tractors, loaders and trucks.
  2. Skill in use of power tools that might include jackhammers, chain saws, drills, rollers, mowers, edgers, snow blower, hedge & string trimmers.
  3. Skill in use of manual tools that might include hand saws, picks, hammers, shovels, rakes, rollers, brooms and tampers.
  4. Knowledge of safety practices and procedures for equipment and tools.
  5. Knowledge of department policy, procedures and work rules.
  6. Ability to work independently but remain flexible in accordance with demands of schedule and work team in order to achieve department objectives.
  7. Ability to adhere to safety standards and recognize safety warnings and hazards.
  8. Ability to measure distances, add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  9. Ability to demonstrate clear vision during the day and at night, and sound hearing to avoid possible hazards, including moving vehicles and road equipment.
  10. Ability to perform manual tasks or operate equipment for extended periods of time in adverse weather conditions.
  11. Ability to demonstrate polite and courteous manner toward fellow employees and Township customers.

Required Education and Experience

  1. High School Diploma or GED
  2. 3 years of experience working in Public Works or related field

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. 1 years of experience in any one or more of the following:
    • Commercial or Residential pool maintenance experience to include operating, inspecting, and maintaining pool filtration, circulation, and chemical feed systems to ensure safe and compliant operation; performing routine maintenance of pools, decks, gutters, skimmers, strainers, filters, and associated aquatic facilities; backwashing filters, cleaning pump baskets, replacing filter media, and assisting with preventative maintenance of mechanical equipment; identifying and troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, leaks, or safety hazards.
    • Landscape construction experience to include layout and preparation for hardscape projects, landscape plant identification, pruning, bed maintenance, water feature installation and maintenance.
  2. CDL preferred, but not required.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  1. Ability to obtain and maintain Flagger Certification
  2. Willing to work overtime as required
