Job Description

Glacier Fish Company is dedicated to producing the highest quality frozen-at-sea groundfish products in the world. We accomplish our mission with a day-in-and-day-out commitment to quality, safety, consistent attention to detail and an on-going concern for the stability and health of the North Pacific fishery resource.
We are one of the largest producers of frozen at sea cod and pollock, and distributes seafood throughout the world. We manage two trawl catcher-processor vessels that operate in the Bering Sea and off the coast of Washington and Oregon. Come join us with one of the many exciting job opportunities available!
Pursers work aboard commercial/at-sea processing vessels in the Bering Sea, Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Alaska and Aleutian Islands.
The Purser/Data Manager works under the direction of the Master and Mate and is responsible for assisting onboard managers with the administration of their duties, communicating vessel information and needs to the Seattle office and governmental agencies as required. Provide medical assistance to injured/ill crew members. Inspect fresh and frozen product to identify non-conforming elements, ensure product meets company quality standards. Maintain records of inspections and observations collected and reports as directed.
Regularly scheduled for 16 hour shifts, may be required to work additional hours due to occasional urgent vessel needs. Shipyard duties to be fulfilled as required or assigned.

Purser/Wheelhouse Job Responsibilities

  • Works as a part of onboard emergency response team as per the Station Bill
  • Administers health program onboard vessel, providing medical assessment and treatment in coordination with HealthForce doctors. This includes tracking medical inventory, ordering and completing medical logs and forms.
  • Assists the Mate in Safety Management reporting responsibilities including assisting in the documentation of briefings, orientations, monthly and trip level inspections, daily checklists, safety walk through of vessel, meetings, and work permits.
  • Updates and maintains all fishing/NMFS/CDQ/ADFG/USCG/EPA/OSHA/docking paperwork, and all required logs.
  • Manages Vessel quota per tow, reconciles, and updates changes as directed by office. Tracks MRA’s and checks for regulation changes.
  • Coordinates Offloads; requests petty cash, vehicles, P.O.’s, contacts vendors, arranges dock space, clinic visits and communicates expected time of arrival and ensures authorizations are completed before offload begins. Checks Northbound parts list for incoming Wheelhouse orders, checks off parts received.
  • Updates and maintains official crew rosters and prepares notice of arrivals for USCG.
  • Acts as administrative liaison between crew and HR; works with HR to coordinate any onboard complaints and/or investigations under direction of the Master and Safety and Compliance Manager.

Data Management/Factory Job Responsibilities

  • In charge of all final decisions regarding QA, including communication with office.
  • Conduct daily monitoring duties to include Sanitation Log, Chlorine Log (engineer assist), Metal Inclusion Log (Foreman assist), Thermometer Calibration Log and Freezer Hold Temp Log.
  • Ensures Core temps are taken at each freezer break (performs 2 per day).
  • Provide trip based photos to the office of product labels, packaging, fresh & frozen products.
  • Ensures 6 fresh pan checks per day-must perform 2 and foreman ensures other 4 are completed.
  • Ensures 2 frozen Deconstructive checks per day-must perform 1 and foreman ensures other 1 is completed.
  • Monitors and maintains haul checks.
  • Enforces and upholds all GMP, Sanitation/Personal Hygiene requirements in coordination with factory key crew.
  • Coordinate with Corporate Quality Assurance on sampling frequency, plans and end of trip samples, document packages, etc.
  • Ensure all HACCP/Sanitation documentation is properly reviewed by certified personnel in a timely manner.
  • Collect Recovery Test data from foreman.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Marine Science or related field preferred.
  • 2+ years’ of experience as a Purser or Observer onboard a fishing vessel preferred.
  • Experience providing medical treatment or providing patient care preferred.
  • 1+ year of experience performing administrative work.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of factory trawler quality and safety programs preferred.
  • Basic understanding of the various laws and regulations and how/when they may apply.
  • Highly proficient computer skills including MS Suite.
  • Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and percentages.
  • Excellent communication skills; written and spoken English.
  • Able to read and interpret policies and procedures.
  • Organized with strong attention to detail.
  • A self-starter who is motivated and able to meet operation deadlines.
  • Able to handle competing priorities and deadlines effectively and respond well to last minute, high priority and time sensitive projects.
  • Able to handle confidential matters and maintain confidentiality of employment information.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and think critically to resolve problems.

Compensation

  • Free Room and Board.
  • Eligible for 401K.
  • Health/Dental benefits once eligibility requirements are met.
  • Crew Share based compensation.
  • Option to extend contract up to 90 days.
$9,000 - $13,000 a month
Crew are paid a crew share which can range between $4,500 - $8500 each trip worked. Trip lengths can vary between 13 - 20 days on average depending on fishing conditions. There are a scheduled number of trips the vessel will fish each season based on quota. Shipyard work is available while the vessel is in port between the fishing seasons.
