Job Description

The Quality Control division provides our employees with a consistent path to learn and progress. You will be able to work with new quality control equipment in our lab, and also work remote at plants and on construction projects. Ideal candidates will have good math and technical skills, a valid driver's license, and be willing to work extended hours and multiple shifts. We will develop the right individuals with no experience.

Core Skill Areas & Responsibilities:

  1. Field & Lab Testing:
  • Conduct field density testing of Hot Mix Asphalt on active construction projects using nuclear gauges or other devices.
  • Extract, cut, and test core samples from roadway/highway construction surfaces.
  • Perform lab-based testing of asphalt and aggregate properties in accordance with ODOT, KYTC, and INDOT specifications.
  1. Quality Analysis & Compliance:
  • Determine material compliance based on DOT and internal specifications.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate daily quality control reports.
  • Identify, document, and troubleshoot quality issues and communicate findings to the Quality Control Manager.
  1. Communication & Collaboration:
  • Coordinate regularly with paving and milling foremen, plant operators, project managers, and quality control personnel.
  • Provide clear feedback on quality standards and recommend corrective actions when needed.
  1. Equipment Operation & Maintenance:
  • Operate and maintain quality control testing instruments, including nuclear density gauges and lab testing equipment.
  • Calibrate tools as needed to ensure test accuracy and reliability.

Core Competencies:

  • Analytical Thinking- Strong skills in data analysis, problem-solving, and interpretation of technical specs.
  • Math Proficiency- Comfortable performing basic and advanced calculations (e.g., density, volume, gradation).
  • Independence & Initiative- Able to manage daily tasks and travel independently to job sites.
  • Communication- Capable of collaborating with various teams and documenting results clearly.
  • Adaptability- Comfortable working outdoors in changing conditions and with diverse teams across multiple states.
  • Attention to Detail- Ensures all reports, samples, and processes meet exacting quality standards.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or certifications in construction materials testing a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record and reliable transportation.
  • Experience in asphalt or aggregate testing preferred but not required-on-the-job training available.
  • Must be able to work independently and adapt to varying management styles and project needs.

Working Conditions:

  • Frequent travel to construction sites and plants throughout Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.
  • Exposure to extreme weather and highway construction environments.
  • Flexible schedule including potential overtime, night, and weekend shifts.
  • Fieldwork includes standing, walking, lifting (50+ lbs), and working near heavy machinery and traffic zones.
