Job Description

The position is responsible for managing the quality control inspection and calibration of intercompany products to effectively ensure conformance of intercompany items to Thorlabs quality standards. Responsibilities include capturing issues, solving problems, and promoting quality throughout the company. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Manage the team of Quality Inspectors Intercompany
  • Oversee the daily operations of the Intercompany team, ensuring efficient and effective performance as the technical expert Create and use metrics for monitoring and managing performance of team
  • Conduct annual performance reviews and participate in interviews
  • Prepare updates and presentations as needed
  • Monitor and manage department priorities, attendance, performance, and training
  • Responsible for the containment of non-conforming intercompany items and feedback of findings to responsible engineering teams.
  • Complete minor repairs, as appropriate, to out-of-specification units
  • Access the required assembly instructions and/or drawing for the item to be repaired
  • General understanding of various testing equipment to validate the repair
  • Order required components from respective entities to complete repairs
  • Coordinate with the RMA department
  • Conduct preliminary inspections of intercompany items returned as a Customer Service o Perform an evaluation, if possible, on an intercompany item that is required as an immediate replacement
  • Advise on the availability of spare intercompany components if a special Customer request occurs
  • Conduct Customer calibrations for power meters and specific sensors and train team
  • Understand the basic functionality of the calibration setup
  • Perform adjustments to the calibration system based on standards
  • Show proficiency in performing the calibration procedure
  • Generate and maintain the required Calibration Certificates o Complete minor adjustments, upgrades and repairs on power sensors and power meters

In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:

  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

The Company retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.

Physical Activities:

Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. Exerts up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Qualifications Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in quality control function in manufacturing environment preferred
  • Optics or Manufacturing inspection experience preferred

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physics or equivalent field, or equivalent work experience

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to learn, understand, and effectively apply sampling plans
  • Skilled in the usage of handheld measuring tools and devices including but not limited to calipers and micrometers
  • Good verbal and written communication skills to operate in both individual and team environments
  • Capable of reading mechanical drawings and interpret dimensional tolerances
  • Adaptable to process and procedure changes
  • Capacity to convert from imperial to metric measurements
  • Ability to meet department standards for productivity and quality
  • Computer literacy using MS Office, Outlook and ERP software is mandatory.
  • Must have the ability to cross train on all areas of the department, including but not limited to visual and dimensional inspection, data entry, laser engravers, and metrology equipment
  • High attention to detail

The salary range for this position is $89,740.00 - $94,000 D.O.E.
