Special Information:

This position may be eligible for a statutory base pay increase of $1.00 an hour effective July 1, 2026.

Travel to and from work site in the applicant's personal vehicle is required. This position requires the ability to lift 50 lbs, sit, or stand for long periods of time; assist public in harsh and inclement weather, willingness to travel to Bighorn River and work some weekends and holidays. This position will be required to wear a Montana State Parks uniform and comply with Parks and Outdoor Recreation Division and department policies.

This seasonal position will be required to work 40 hours per week; weekend and holiday work will be required due to operational demands and visitor use patterns. It will be the responsibility of the employee to travel to and from the park both for regular shifts and emergencies at their own expense.

Housing may be available at Chief Plenty Coups State Park for this position.

Chief Plenty Coups State Park is located on the Apsaalooke (Crow) Reservation near the town of Pryor, MT and a 35-mile drive from Billings, MT. Nestled at the foot of the Pryor Mountains, the Park includes National Historic Landmark Chief Plenty Coups house and store, a visitor center, Day Use Areas, Heritage Apple Orchard and walking trail bordered by Pryor (Arrow) Creek. The Park offers educational programing, special events, recreation and unique cultural perspectives from tribal members, many of whom are fluent in their native language.

Responsibility area of this position also includes FWP owned sites along the Bighorn River. The Bighorn River is a popular tail-water fishery in it's upper reaches and experiences some of the highest recreational pressures in the state. It transitions into warm-water fishery and local angling spot in it's lower reaches. There are seven FWP owned sites stretching from its confluence with the Yellowstone near Custer, MT to the Yellowtail Afterbay Dam in Fort Smith, MT.

This is a seasonal position set at 0.5 FTE (6 month position) running from late April to October. The work is done both inside the visitor center and outdoors. The incumbent will be expected to work independently, with irregular hours, in adverse weather conditions. Weekend, holiday, and evening work is required. Good physical condition is essential. The Recreation Technician assists in operations within a geographic unit of State Parks, Fishing Access Sites, and river corridors. The position reports to the unit's Recreation Manager and provides support in administrative, operational, recreation, visitor use, and visitor services tasks while stewarding the natural, cultural, and historical resources.

This position provides essential services and addresses tasks as they arise, such as visitor contacts, rule compliance, fee collection and remittance, interpretation and education, and other duties as assigned.

This recreation technician patrols FWP sites for rule and fee compliance. Explains and interprets rules, policies, and laws to the public. Assists FWP Wardens and other law enforcement agencies in the enforcement of laws, rules, and regulations within the park and Fishing Access Sites. Investigates and documents offenses and incidents in accordance with agency policy. Informs visitors on preserving and mitigating impacts on historical, cultural, natural, and recreational resources. Understands enforcement authority and jurisdictional thresholds and who to call for assistance for a wide variety of situations.

The position may assist in use monitoring and identifying recreational use trends within their assigned area. Recreation technicians provide front-line customer service to the public and diffuse recreational use conflicts. Technicians identify maintenance needs among sites and perform light maintenance duties and assist in other maintenance related projects as identified.

A Recreation Technician works amongst a team of recreational and maintenance staff to accomplish agency goals and steward resources.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

Graduation from high school or equivalent education. One year of college or vocational training experience in park and recreation management, interpretive visitor center, or closely related setting is preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
