Special Information:

This position may be eligible for a statutory base pay increase of $1.00 an hour effective July 1, 2026.

Identity of applicants who become finalists may be released to the public if the Department deems it necessary. Employees who exceed 1,040 hours in a calendar year are also provided health, dental and life insurance. Other benefits include retirement, paid vacation, sick and holidays. This position may be covered by a VEBA (Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association).

This position is located at the beautiful Tongue River Reservoir State Park in Decker, Montana, about 25 miles north of historic Sheridan, Wyoming. This remote park has several large campgrounds serving southeast Montana and is well known for its fishing and boating opportunities. A marina store is also on site to serve visitors. This position would also serve Rosebud Battlefield State Park, a minimally developed National Historic Landmark commemorating the Battle of the Rosebud ("Where the Girl Saved her Brother") during the Sioux Wars of the late 1800's. Located 12 miles north of the reservoir, it is a great place for hiking and reflecting on America's history.

The position is seasonal, running from about late-May to early-September each year. The parks are busiest on the weekends and holidays, so working these days along with extra hours is expected.

State housing is provided during the season and may consist of three-bedroom modular homes with shared living areas such as laundry, kitchen, bathrooms and living rooms or a recreation trailer. There may be a small monthly charge for housing that is directly taken out of the paycheck. Pets are not allowed except as approved by management.

Job Duties:

Duties include assisting campers with questions, monitoring recreation sites by foot or vehicle, advise visitors of rules and regulations. Report violations observed to superiors. Monitor visitor use impacts on historical and recreational resources and advise visitors of best practices. Light duty maintenance responsibilities including groundskeeping, janitorial services, and minor repairs. Interaction with campers and the public is a regular occurrence and customer service skills are beneficial. Provide emergency assistance or medical aid as appropriate with training.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or equivalent education. One year of college or vocational training experience in park and recreation management, interpretive visitor center, or closely related setting is preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required at time of application: General knowledge of basic customer service and safe work habits.

Ability to: educate and inform visitors on compliance with rules and regulations and State laws; collect fees and make change; sell merchandise and account for monies collected; read, maintain, and prepare records and reports; and assist visitors in emergency situations. Daily interaction with site visitors requires effective communication and public relations skills.
