Description:

POSITION PURPOSE

  • The Nurse Specialty - Wound, Ostomy, Continence RN provides expertise in the nursing care of patients considering age specific, developmental, cultural, and spiritual needs. Promotes the use of current knowledge, techniques and research through practice, teaching and consultation; and serves a facilitator for change in the nursing practice. Performs professional nursing functions for selected patients.

  • Part-time position scheduled 40 hours bi-weekly

  • Primarily Monday through Friday with flexibility based on department needs

  • Provides wound, ostomy, and continence support across the entire inpatient hospital population

MINIUMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Requires Bachelors degree in Nursing. Masters degree is preferred.

  • Education: Completion of Enterostomal Therapy Program.

  • Experience: Three to five years progressively more responsible related work experiences.

  • Certification/Licensure: Current Michigan license as a Registered Nurse; WOC preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to provide nursing care to patients and families, communicate complex concepts to all levels of personnel, and collaborate effectively with other health care team members.

  • Advanced analytical skills to assist in implementing and developing delivery of care systems, policies and procedures, evaluate nursing practice and develop educational programs.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Provides advanced nursing care to patients or groups of patients across the health care continuum in collaboration with the health care team. Provides on-going post discharge services for patients requiring evaluation and follow-up (outpatient ostomy clinic).

  • Develop a care plan for selected individuals, or groups of patients in collaboration with nursing staff and other disciplines.

  • Selects appropriate ostomy and wound care products based on evaluation of patients' needs and capabilities. Fits ostomy equipment for patients after surgery.

  • Reviews/develops/evaluates interdisciplinary plan of care within area of clinical expertise for selected groups or individual patients. Collaborate with nursing staff and other disciplines as needed.

  • Sets direction for nursing practice consistent with effective utilization of resources, patient's identified goals, and standards of care.

  • Sets direction for nursing practice in the care of patients with disorders of gastrointestinal, genitourinary systems consistent with SJMGS/THS and national standards. Utilizes evidence-based practice and/or research findings into practice changes.

  • Utilize the nursing process at an expert level to assess, diagnose and treat the complex responses of individuals, families or communities to actual or potential health problems.

  • Functions as an educator by teaching clients, families, communities and other health care providers; and serves as a role model and preceptor for other nurses in a variety of settings. Share expertise with all members of the health care team through consultation and collaboration.

  • Takes leadership role for quality improvement initiative, providing in depth clinical expertise and critical analysis.

  • Provides clinical expertise in the selection and evaluation of specialty beds, purchasing and supplies.

  • Participates in the identification, development and evaluation of patient teaching programs and patient education materials considering age specific, maturational, cultural, and spiritual needs.

  • Collaborate with nursing management in making recommendations/decisions regarding clinical practice issues and effective utilization of resources.

  • Participates in, or chairs various departmental, health system and medical staff committees/task forces.
