A research emphasis on HIV or other viruses, or other communicable diseases including sexually transmitted infections, is preferred. This is a full-time position based in our regional office located in Capitol Hill, Washington D.C. with a hybrid work model.

Reporting to the Director of Research Science, the Research Scientist III will design and implement major investigator-initiated health services and epidemiology-related research projects in the area of infectious diseases. You will also secure external funding through federal, foundation, or industry grants, and disseminate findings through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. The Research Scientist III may contribute to intramural projects relevant to MAPRI and MAPMG, providing assistance as needed for study design, analysis plans, and interpretation of results. Please note, this is not a basic research, microbiology, non-human research, or bench science position.

You can expect to:

  • Develop an innovative research portfolio in infectious disease healthcare delivery and outcomes, working both independently and in collaboration with external partners, leveraging Kaiser Permanente’s extensive clinical data
  • Prepare and submit grant proposals and secure extramural research funding, aiming to achieve funding for 75–80% of annual effort within five years
  • Initiate and maintain collaborations with external partners, including federal agencies, other Kaiser Permanente regions, research networks, and academic or healthcare system partners
  • Publish at least two first-author papers and at least two papers as a collaborating author annually, and present research findings (poster or oral) at national scientific meetings
  • Collaborate with MAPRI research teams (data analysts, project managers, and biostatisticians), leading research studies and ensuring they are completed successfully
  • Mentor MAPMG staff, physician researchers, and research interns
  • Contribute to the scientific community through being a peer reviewer for journals (at least four per year) and participating in expert or grant review panels

What is required:

  • PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in Epidemiology, Health Services Research, or related discipline OR an MD/DO with an additional advanced research degree (e.g., MPH, MAS, MS, PhD) is required
  • Extensive experience in infectious disease research; a research emphasis on HIV or other viruses, or other communicable diseases including sexually transmitted infections, is preferred.
  • Minimum of eleven (11) years of post-doctoral research experience in epidemiology, health services research, or related field is required; experience in a health system research setting preferred
  • Successful track record of extramural grant funding as Principal Investigator
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals
  • Demonstrated ability to design and lead simultaneous original research studies, including multi-site studies, and publish results
  • Must be able to go into the regional office located in Capitol Hill, Washington D.C. at least quarterly, and on an as-needed basis
  • Candidates must either currently live in or be willing to relocate to the Washington D.C., Maryland, or Virginia area
  • Must provide documentation of the Covid vaccine 2-dose series (or J&J 1-dose) prior to October 1, 2023, or documentation for 1-dose of the most current Covid vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) as a condition of employment. Must provide documentation for the influenza vaccine as a condition of employment.

Competitive Benefits:

  • Competitive compensation package
  • 100% employer-funded medical and dental insurance premiums for employees and families
