For over 25 years, National Experienced Workforce Solutions (NEW Solutions) has specialized in connecting experienced workers (ages 55+) with full-time and part-time job opportunities that support the critical missions of Federal Agencies across the United States.

NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS). These experienced professionals provide administrative, scientific, and technical support to the Agricultural Research Service through the Experienced Worker Program (EWP).

Positions listed here do not guarantee employment for any definite period. Enrollment in the Experienced Worker Programs administered by NEW Solutions is temporary. The enrollment relationship between NEW Solutions and the Enrollee is an ?at-will? relationship. This means that an Enrollee is free to terminate enrollment at any time during the enrollment period, and NEW Solutions and the Agency have the right to terminate the relationship with the Enrollee.

PLEASE NOTE: An ?Enrollee? is not a federal employee, nor an employee of NEW Solutions. An ?Enrollee? is a participant in a grant program established through a Cooperative Agreement funded by the agency and administered by NEW Solutions. The enrollee shall not sign federal documents, authorize the use of federal funds, nor initiate or conduct federally funded research projects. The enrollee shall not author articles for publication as a federal employee, nor coordinate scientific research between the Government and private industry. The enrollee shall not present themselves as a Government employee or Government representative at meetings both foreign and domestic or when coordinating federal agencies? areas of research. The enrollee shall not make decisions on federally based research on behalf of Government policy makers, and the enrollee shall not supervise any Government employees.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 4 year(s) of experience in Invertebrate Physiology. OR BA/BS Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Agriculture, Marine Sciences, Environmental Science, Genetics, Biotechnology.

  • Familiar with flow-through seawater facility, experience maintaining laboratory supply inventory, chemical inventory, and purchasing.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel
Duties:

Enrollee works as a lab tech under the supervision of a senior scientist.The National Cold Water Marine Aquaculture Center in Kingston, RI is seeking a motivated individual to provide technical support for research aimed at developing phenotyping strategies and biomarkers for commercially important traits in eastern oyster. The position involves maintenance of flowthrough seawater systems, animal care, and performing laboratory assays that quantify physiological processes.The enrollee shall not sign federal documents, authorize the use of federal funds, nor initiate or conduct federally funded research projects. The enrollee shall not author articles for publication as a federal employee, nor coordinate scientific research between the Government and private industry. The enrollee shall not present themselves as a Government employee or Government representative at meetings both foreign and domestic or when coordinating federal agencies? areas of research. The enrollee shall not make decisions on federally based research on behalf of Government policy makers, and the enrollee shall not supervise any Government employees.

  • Assists in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment, common to the assigned area of work.   20%
  • Keeps detailed records of experimental data. Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages.   20%
  • Maintains inventory of chemicals, prepares solutions, orders reagents for use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse, and safely disposes of waste material (both chemical and biological).   20%
  • Maintains, calibrates, and modifies equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.   20%
  • Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies samples and supporting records; maintains records and locates and compiles data and other information from various sources.   20%
Other:
  • Training provided as needed.
  • Travel Requirements: Travel as required for specimen collection. Overnight travel potentially a few nights per year.
  • Overnight travel: Potentially a few nights per year.
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Basic laboratory safety training provided through the University of Rhode Island. Incumbent will attend online training, take assessment, and obtain safety certification prior to working in laboratory environments.
  • Required Safety Gear: The Safety and Occupational Health Specialist will identify safety equipment needs on the first day in the workplace.
  • Physical requirements: Occasionally lifting 30-40 lb containers of filtered water. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
