Job Description:

The Intern, Respiratory Care possesses working knowledge of routine respiratory care and has displayed age-specific competence in their educational program for pediatric (ages 13 months to 11 years), adolescent (ages 12 to 17), adult (ages 18 to 65) or geriatric (ages 66 and over) patients. The intern supports and contributes to departmental productivity and organizational objectives by functioning as an integrated member of the respiratory care team and performs services consistent with their scope of licensure. The intern supports and exhibits behaviors consistent with the organization’s mission and values.

Essential Functions:Under the direct supervision of a Respiratory Therapist, this position will provide patient care as allowed by student license including: 
  •     Administers non-medicated aerosol and humidity therapyAdministers oxygen therapy (including implementation of oxygen therapy protocol where appropriate)
  •     Administers aerosolized medicationAdministers incentive spirometry
  •     Cleans and reprocesses respiratory therapy equipmentAdministers bronchial hygiene and performs chest physiotherapy (including implementation of bronchial hygiene protocol where appropriate)
  •     Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation and manual ventilation during resuscitation attempts and assists in rapid response callsPerforms electrocardiogram (ECG) 

    Additional Job Description:

    Education:    Must have completed the equivalent of one year of an accredited respiratory therapy educational program with a minimum GPA of 2.0. (required)The intern shall remain in good standing and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 throughout his/her employment as an Intern, Respiratory Care (required)Experience:     Clinical rotation experience through educational program (preferred)

    Licensure:Limited Mandatory Certificate (license) issued by the Kentucky Board of Respiratory Care (required)

    Certification:Basic Life Support (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required)
