Job Description
Rock Truck Driver
Accountabilities:
- Operates off-highway haulage truck with dump bed used to haul up to 240 tons of rock and soil from above coal seams in open pit mines.
- Inspects the truck for safety and operation defects.
- Competes written equipment component checklist report of inspection.
- Operates steering wheel, hand brake, foot brake, accelerator pedal, gear shift lever, dump lever, and various other levers, knobs, pedals and switches located inside the cab of the truck.
- Back vehicle under the bucket of overburden loading machine in order to be loaded with rock.
- Drives vehicle up and down grades and negotiates curves.
- Backs vehicle up to the edge of dump areas and causes bed to dump the overburden.
- May assist other employees or perform other duties when rock truck is not needed.
Requirements:
- Thorough operational knowledge and skills necessary to operate specific equipment.
- Ability to operate assigned equipment safely and efficiently.
- Ability to detect faults or impending faults in the specific equipment and report such findings in a timely manner.
- Ability to maneuver vehicle in crowded areas.
- Ability to safely and productively operate the equipment in reverse and negotiate the edge of the dump areas to allow rock and soil to be dumped over the edge of the dump area while preventing the truck from going over the edge of the dump area.
- Ability to safely drive in mud and snow and other slick off road conditions.
- Ability to communicate over 2-way radio which may be located in the vehicle.
- Ability to see well at night.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.

- WV Surface Miner Certification
