The Position: The Safety & Health Manager is responsible for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of occupational health, safety, and environmental programs across manufacturing, retail, bakery, culinary, and administrative operations. This role ensures compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, identifies and mitigates workplace risks, and monitors safety performance through data analysis and reporting. The position partners with operational and functional leaders to integrate safety practices into daily operations, leads incident prevention and investigation efforts, oversees safety training and program execution, and supports health compliance.

The Location: White River Junction, VT; onsite daily.

The Pay: $75,000 to $100,000 annual salary; commensurate with experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain health and safety programs, policies, and procedures across all operational areas.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations and internal standards.
  • Conduct audits, inspections, and risk assessments; track and resolve identified hazards and gaps.
  • Manages incident response and workers’ compensation processes, including investigations, claim tracking, stakeholder communication, assessments, and coordination of medical appointments.
  • Lead investigations of workplace incidents, including injuries, illnesses, and near misses; complete root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
  • Analyze safety data and performance metrics to identify trends, risks, and areas for improvement; develop dashboards to highlight key health and safety metrics
  • Oversee and maintain core safety programs, including lockout/tagout, machine guarding, hazard communication, ergonomics, contractor safety, and emergency preparedness.
  • Develop and deliver safety training for employees and leaders; setting standards, and holding teams accountable for corrective actions and program participation
  • Actively promote a strong safety culture by serving as an engaged leader of health and safety programs, encouraging participation, accountability, and continuous improvement across the organization.
  • Monitor environmental health conditions, including chemical safety, waste handling, sanitation, and air quality, ensuring compliance and risk control.
  • Prepare reports and communicate safety performance, trends, and recommendations to leadership; drive accountability for corrective actions.

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, or a related field; or equivalent experience along with Professional certification such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), ASP, or similar.
  • Minimum of 5–8 years of progressive health and safety experience, preferably with program ownership.
  • Experience in manufacturing, food production, retail, hospitality, kitchen, or similarly complex operational environments preferred including experience supporting multi-site or multi-function operations.
  • Experience supporting multi-site or multi-function operations.
  • Experience with workers’ compensation, return-to-work programs, and claims management, including experience leading incident investigations, audits, and safety program implementation.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Ability to partner effectively with operations, facilities, HR (People & Culture), and leadership to integrate safety into workflows, projects, and decision-making.
  • Influencing and Communication Skills: Ability to communicate safety expectations clearly, provide guidance, and influence leaders and employees to adopt safe behaviors and meet safety standards.
  • Problem Solving and Decision Making: Ability to assess complex safety issues, evaluate options, and make sound, timely decisions that balance operational needs with risk mitigation.
  • Continuous Improvement Orientation: Ability to identify opportunities to improve safety programs and processes, implement changes, and sustain improvements over time.

  • Ability to work for prolonged periods at a desk, both in a home office and onsite, using a computer and other standard office equipment.

  • Regular standing, walking, bending, or reaching.
  • May occasionally be required to lift or move items up to 20 pounds
  • Visual acuity needed for reviewing documents, spreadsheets, and data on screens.
  • Ability to commute to the office for in-person meetings, trainings, or other business needs as required.

Work Environment

  • Occasional dusty environment from dry ingredients
  • Environment where many common food allergens are present
  • Temperatures on the receiving floor that can be below 60 degrees at times
