Job Description

Safety Manager

Portland, OR | Full-Time-Exempt | $95,000-$125,000 Annually

Porter W. Yett Company

Porter W. Yett Company is a leading heavy civil construction contractor specializing in asphalt recycling, soil stabilization, asphalt milling, and heavy haul transportation. Safety is central to everything we do, and we are committed to building a culture where every employee goes home safely every day.

We are seeking an experienced Safety Manager to lead and continuously improve our company-wide safety program across field operations, transportation, plants, shops, and construction sites.

Position Overview

The Safety Manager will oversee all safety initiatives, regulatory compliance, training programs, incident investigations, and risk reduction efforts throughout the organization. This role partners closely with operations leadership and field teams to create a proactive, accountable, and safety-driven culture.

This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on safety professional who thrives in heavy construction environments and wants to make a visible impact across a growing organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all company safety programs across field operations, shops, plants, trucking, and construction sites
  • Conduct field inspections, audits, and job hazard analyses
  • Investigate incidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions
  • Develop and deliver practical, field-focused safety training
  • Maintain OSHA compliance and safety documentation
  • Ensure compliance with DOT, and applicable state and federal regulations
  • Partner with operations leadership to improve safe work practices and reduce incidents
  • Develop and deliver safety training for field personnel, supervisors, and new hires
  • Monitor workers’ compensation trends and accident prevention efforts
  • Monitor safety performance metrics and recommend continuous improvements
  • Assist with emergency response planning and fire prevention activities
  • Enforce company safety policies and hold teams accountable when standards are not met

What We're Looking For

  • Experience managing safety programs in heavy civil construction, asphalt, trucking, aggregates, or related industries
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety standards
  • Experience conducting safety audits, investigations, and training programs
  • Ability to build trust and communicate effectively with field crews and leadership teams
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Willingness to spend significant time in active field environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or similar certification preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Construction Management, or related field preferred
  • Experience with asphalt plants, crushing operations, heavy equipment, or commercial transportation is highly valued

Work Environment

This position includes both office and field responsibilities. Regular exposure to active construction sites, heavy equipment, dust, noise, weather conditions, moving machinery, asphalt plants, and trucking operations. Field presence is a critical part of the position, and industrial environments should be expected. This Role May NOT Be a Fit If You:

  • Prefer primarily office-based safety work
  • Have limited construction field experience
  • Are uncomfortable addressing unsafe behaviors directly
  • Lack experience working around heavy equipment or industrial operations
  • Prefer policy administration over hands-on field engagement

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation based on experience
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Competitive health benefit package
  • Paid time off
  • Stable, long-term opportunity with an established company
  • Opportunity to directly influence company-wide safety culture and operations
