Position SummaryMesabi Metallics is looking for a Safety Technician with to support the implementation and enforcement of workplace safety programs. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of MSHA standards, ensuring regulatory compliance, reducing incidents, and promoting a culture of safety across all site operations.
Job ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Safety Manager, the Safety Technician will be responsible for the following:- Conduct regular workplace safety inspections and hazard assessments across surface and/or underground mining operations.
- Enforce compliance with MSHA and company-specific health and safety regulations.
- Identify, report, and assist in correcting unsafe acts, conditions, and practices.
- Support incident investigations by gathering evidence, interviewing personnel, and preparing detailed reports.
- Maintain safety documentation, including training records, inspection checklists, and incident logs.
- Deliver safety training sessions and toolbox talks on relevant topics such as PPE, confined space entry, working at heights, and equipment operation.
- Monitor contractor compliance with site safety requirements.
- Participate in emergency preparedness drills and support response activities.
- Collaborate with site supervisors and department heads to implement risk mitigation strategies.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Safety Technician or similar role within the mining industry.
- Strong knowledge of MSHA.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
- Experience conducting safety inspections, audits, and incident investigations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in a safety-related field preferred.
- Ability to work in both mining and plant environments, including exposure to dust, noise, and varying weather conditions.
- Capability to perform physical tasks, such as lifting, inspecting equipment, and navigating uneven terrain.
- $70,000 - $85,000 annually, depending on experience and qualificiations.

- Paid Time Off (PTO):
- 0-5 Years: 120 hours per year.
- 5-10 Years: 160 hours per year.
- 10+ Years: 200 hours per year.
- Plus 9 paid holiday and 2 floating holidays.
