Position Title: Forestry Technician Individual Placement – 480 or 560 Hour

Position Summary:

Sawtooth National Forest is recruiting one, 480- or 560-hour (12-14-weeks) individual placement beginning May/June 2026, through August/September 2026. The individual placement will conduct reforestation projects including post fire surveys, cone collection, and seedling planting. The individual placement will conduct timber sale prep including harvest unit layout, designation of timber for harvest, and cruising of merchantable timber.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Specific activities include:

  • 50% of work will be silviculture focused on reforestation efforts, 30% of this work will be in the Bald Mountain Stewardship Project
  • 50% of work will be timber sale prep focused for prep of timber harvest units, 30% of this work will be in the Bald Mountain Stewardship Project

Required Qualifications:

  • Ages 18-30 (up to 35 for veterans)
  • U.S. Citizen or lawful, permanent resident
  • Must pass a background/driver check
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Current driver's license
  • Willingness to work as part of a small team
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • A positive attitude
  • Ability to lift and carry 50lbs
  • Ability and interest to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain for up to 8 hours per day in all weather conditions
  • Ability to hike 5-10 miles in a day in rugged country

Desired Qualifications:

  • Working in adverse outdoor environments
  • Math skills (fractions, basic algebra, basic trigonometry)
  • Hand tool use and maintenance
  • 4x4 vehicle operation
  • Driver's License
  • Personal transportation
  • Attention to detail.
  • Physically fit for long days of hard work
  • Coursework in forestry is desired, especially working toward a forestry degree
  • Working familiarity with tree and plant identification in the Rocky Mountains

Duty Location:

Duties are performed within the Sawtooth National Forest Duty Station in Stanley, Idaho and housing is provided. Stanley has a gas station, grocery store with basic items, a health clinic, and restaurants. Stanley is a remote town approximately 1 hour 15 minutes from a hospital and grocery store with more than basic items.

Terms of Employment:

One individual placement will complete a term of service (480-560 hours), starting May/June 2026, through August/September 2026 for a total of 12-14 Weeks. The individual placement will average 40 hours of labor per week, minus holidays. Individual placements are responsible for providing their own personal transportation and food.

Program Benefits:

Individual placements will earn $7,680 or up to $8,960 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis throughout the 12 or 14 Weeks. Housing will be provided. This position will include reimbursement funding for relevant travel and/or training. The living allowance is taxable.
