Job Description

Faculty Salary Scale

(see https://www.makingwavesacademy.org/careers/benefits). Our scale ensures equitable pay progression commensurate with experience, education, and professional certifications. Scheduled Weekly Hours 40 (academic year).

Who we areAt Making Waves Academy, we’re more than a school—we’re a launchpad. We’re looking for curious, driven, and data-minded educators who believe that science is the key to unlocking a student's future. Our mission is to bridge the opportunity gap through rigorous instruction, holistic support, and a culture of high expectations. We don’t just teach science; we inspire the next generation of innovators.

What you’ll be doing…As a Middle School Science Teacher, you are the lead investigator in the classroom. You’ll be responsible for creating an environment where inquiry meets impact. From designing hands-on labs to analyzing student performance data, you will ensure every student has the "bandwidth" to succeed in a complex world. You’ll also serve as a vital link for our students as an Advisor, helping them navigate their academic and social-emotional growth.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering Dynamic Instruction: Managing 4-5 classes where you’ll implement standards-based, culturally relevant lesson plans that integrate literacy and critical thinking.
  • Designing the Framework: Submitting weekly "Weeks-at-a-Glance" (WAAGS), syllabi, and unit plans aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and California state requirements.
  • Mentorship & Connection: Leading an Advisory group, acting as a primary point of contact for families and providing targeted support for student development.
  • Culture Leadership: Being a visible presence on campus—from morning huddles to hallway transitions—upholding school-wide norms and safety.

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • A valid state Single / Multiple Subject Teaching Credential (or eligibility/enrollment in a CTC-approved program)
  • Strong content area knowledge
  • Commitment to closing achievement gaps and raising expectations for all students
  • Eligibility for employment clearance (AED, CPR & First Aid, Certificate of Clearance, Live Scan, TB screen), and other employment clearance

Even better if you have:

  • Ability to build strong, positive, and trusting relationships, and to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of a team to achieve common instructional goals.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining a highly structured, positive, and productive learning environment through consistent routines, clear expectations, and effective behavior management.
  • Ability to critically reflect on one's own teaching practice, accept and implement feedback from instructional leaders, and actively seek continuous professional growth.
