Job Description
SUMMARY
The Seasonal Public Works Intern will assist staff in completing various municipal public works tasks, with an emphasis on both field and office-based work. Projects and work assignments will vary widely and may include completing inspections, data entry, contract management assistance, miscellaneous fieldwork assignments such as repairing or replacing asphalt, concrete work, storm drain maintenance, hydrant maintenance, sewer jetting, and assisting with the city's cross-connection program., and other clerical functions as needed.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Reports directly to divisional or department management personnel as assigned. Work assignments may occasionally be received from other city personnel.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties. These examples donot include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform:
- Perform various field inspections including, but not limited to, cross-connection inspections, non-motorized inspections, storm system inspections, forestry-related inspections, and contractor-completed work inspections.
- Work within the CityWorks asset management software system to record data and process public works asset management information.
- Assist full-time staff with contractual service scheduling.
- Support the department's efforts to become an accredited agency through research, policy development, and other administrative tasks.
- Perform other municipal public works field and clerical duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
All of the following functions, qualifications, knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs), and duties are essential. A Seasonal Public Works Intern, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following:
- Ability to accurately use a measuring device and take notes of measurements.
- Ability to work effectively and communicate orally and in writing with people.
- Ability to understand important concepts related to municipal public works, such as the Cross-Connection Program or sidewalk inspection requirements.
