About MoMA PS1PS1 was born out of New York’s alternative space movement in the 1970s, transforming an abandoned nineteenth Century schoolhouse in Long Island City, Western Queens, into a space for artists and their collaborators to generate ideas and present work.
Located in what was once an industrial enclave, the institution has now become a creative landmark in the fastest growing residential neighborhood in the country. In 1976 PS1 was registered as an independent non-profit in a city-owned building, and in 1982 it became the first Cultural Institutions Group member (CIG) that focused on contemporary art as part of NYC’s Department of Cultural Affairs. Then, in 2000 PS1 also established an affiliation with the Museum of Modern Art and in 2010 it became known as MoMA PS1.
In 2023-24 we have a budget of approximately $13MM and are a team of around 50, led by an independent Board of Directors. Working with an evolving constellation of practitioners, neighbors, and partners, we are committed to the critical work of diversity, access, and inclusion. It is through these lenses that we examine and build our programs, relationships, and organizational culture. We champion how artists are at the intersection of the social, cultural, and political issues of their time. We center equity in how we work and what we do.

Summary:Interacts with visitors in a positive and welcoming manner, including providing directions andinformation related to the Museum collection, public programs, and events.
Supervision: Security Managers and Security Supervisors
Responsibilities:
- Communicates Museum policies regarding the safety of the collection and ensures staff andvisitors adhere to established protocols to safeguard the collection from damage.
- Conducts opening and closing procedures, including inspection of assigned galleries andsurrounding areas to guarantee there are no safety issues or concerns prior to opening theMuseum to the public.
- Performs patrols of assigned areas of responsibility and reports issues and/or safetyconcerns to the supervisor.
- Completes daily log and other security reports as required. Reports and responds toemergency incidents (e.g. medical emergencies, natural disasters, etc.).
- Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above, includingexterior facility patrols, escorting contractors/vendors, etc.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent is required. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent is preferred.New York State Guard License required. CPR/AED/FSD and/or Fire Guard certificationpreferred, but training will be provided.
- A minimum of one-year security or customer service experience.
- Prior museum/art-related experience is a plus, but not required.
- Fluency in languages in addition to English preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with strong organizational andplanning skills.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service and maintain professional demeanor in achallenging and dynamic environment.
- Detail oriented, with the capability to work under minimal supervision.
- Ability to walk/stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to climb stairs and stoop/kneel in order to perform securityduties.
- Ability to work weekends (five-day workweek includes weekenddays).
Compensation and Benefits
Salary: $18.00 – 20.00 hourly. Benefits include 20 days paid vacation leave; 10 days paid sick leave; 11 paid holidays; and 3 paid personal days; participation in a 401(k) savings plans, life insurance; medical/health (including visual and dental); transit, health, and dependent care FSA; and pension plan.
Please note that a NY State Security Guard License is required for the Security Officerposition. A provisional time period may be provided in order to acquire this certification as acondition of employment.
